sorry for posting this since i've posted it on another forum, but we haven't gotten the response we needed. so in hopes that some of you haven't read the post on johnny popper forum here goes. cousins son bought a real nice 45 b hand start. the manhe bought it from restored it very nicely and drove it around the yard, put it in a nice building and never drove it again for 4 years. james earl got it and changed the oil and the antifrezze in it over the week end. drove it until it got up to operating temperature and parked it. next morning he checked the water and it was all gone. he removed the oil plug and a gallon of water came out and then milky oil. when he called me i asked him if he put prestone antifreeze back in it and he said how did you know. i quit using prestone 30 years ago because i never put it in anything that didn't have a leak the next morning. he's pulled the valve cover and found a puddle of water in one of the inner push rods tubes. it was nearly so high tha it touched the rod. so we think thats where the leak is. now, how do you get that tube out and what do you put around the tube to help seal it up. we think we can handle flaring the tube and i think i know a way to make an eazyout out of a piece of all threaded rod by spliting it with a hack saw twice and beating the ends down and screwing the rod into the hole and then put a weight on the all thread, put nuts on the end and use it like a slide hammer that body shop guys use. any suggestions from there is appreciated.

a little up date. we're going to put the lower water pipe back on and fill it with water. we've got the pushrods out and from what he can see down in them there is some blistering in the tube. problem now is that i don't know if the stop leak that was in there has harden since its bee exposed to the air where it want leak now. i'll let every one know what happens next. thanks for all the replys.

I had the same situation on a 36 B. Someone suggested this, I tried it and it worked. You can get the tubes out without pulling the head. Find the correct size tap and tap threads inside the tube. I can't remember the size right now. Using a piece of allthread about a foot long, make a slide hammer using an old piston pin for a slide. I used something similar to JB Weld around the new ones when I put them in. CalJim

thanks for the replies already guys. jd did make a set of tools to pull and replace those tubes, but we've called all the old timers we know and none have ever replaced the tubes nor do they have the tools to do it with. it can be done with the head still on the tractor. this tractor is so slick that i hate to even blow up the tires on it, much less put a wrench to it. so we're going to go slow and ease and check out all the possibilites we can find. this boy has rode the country looking for just this tractor and he's just sick over it. he's be promised over the phone that the tactor up in kentucky was the greatest thing he's ever seen. he'd drive up and if it wasn't for having to use the bath room he's have turned around and driven out without even putting a foot on the ground. you'll ask around for us and let see if we can help him out. he's a good kid and wants to show this tractor some this year. thanks guys.

You can do it without pulling the head or messing up much. I did my unstyled B much like caljim just described. I used a 3/8" pipe tap and then adapted a pipe nipple to some all thread then slid a larger pipe over that and with some nuts and washers pulled the tube out of the head and up into that pipe. My new ones didn't fit very tight as all 4 holes in my head were machined differently. Poor quailty control back then I guess ? I had to use JB weld on them and also expand the outer ends with a piece of tapered round steel I had laying around.

Pull the head, and install new tubes.
Not try any stop leak, waist of time on tubes, they wil get worse with time.

seems to me I recall seeing a tool that Deere used to replace the sleeves without pulling the head. Don't remember much about it, but it at least is supportive that it CAN be done.

If it is trully the push rod tubes then (the way I see it) you have 2 choices.

1. If the hole is small you could try putting a radiator leak stopper in and get it warm and hopefully that will cure it.

2. Pull the head (not a fun chore) and put new tubes in. Some have the ability to do it themselves, others (like me) have to take it to a shop and have them pull the old ones out and put the new ones in.

Oh, two more things: Have fun and good luck.
