4240 turbo

I recently bought a 4240 JD with a M&W turbo on it. The turbo has a turbo oil filter and also the tractor has a pre turbo pyro. It is running the factory pump and I haven't checked to see if it has been turned up or not. I was wondering what a safe operating range for that pyro is and what kind of power I can expect to build out of it. Also, hoe much power will those factory pumps build?

OK I"ll be plowing and see what it does. The pyro likes to run 700-800 most all the time so I don"t have much room to go if I start pulling hard. If it makes a lot of power now then would it be feasible to turn the pump down and maybe be able to run a little cooler? I know that the head at least was replaced and the engine runs real good. I don"t want to over do it.

I always heard keep the pyrometer under 1200, thats where aluminum melts and thats what your pistons are made of. Under 1000 would certainly be safer. I have a 4020 with a turbo and turned up pump. The PTO clutch slips at about 150hp and the radiator is good for a lot less. I dont run it anywhere close to full load, just use the extra for reserve. I really should turn it down some. Your 4240 has potential for more, but be reasonable, dont destroy a perfectly good tractor. I've heard of people putting turbos on 4240s and 4040s without touching the pump and getting a significant increase in both power and fuel economy.

Pre turbo you don't want more than 1000 degrees and don't keep on it at that temperature. If the turbo was just mounted on it without the pump being set up you probably will see 105-115 hp depending on what condition the engine is in. The pump can be opened up to give 125-150 hp but the engine won't last long ,you probably will melt down the #5 and #6 pistons on a long hard pull.
