I am currently replaceing some clutch componets on my 54 jd 60 I removed the clutch fork and the entire pulley, as I was inspecting what I had dissasembled I noticed there is a gear on the crankshaft and a gear on the end of the pulley/clutch assembly and that the two gears are rubbing against each other and you can see some noticeable wear, also I do recall before I took any thing apart when the clutch was dissengaged there was a grinding sound coming from the clutch and when the clutch was engaged the noise went away. I was woundering if ther is suposed to be any kind of shim between the two gears. Thanks 54/60

On dads 60, that gear on the inside of the pulley was actually moving off of the pulley and hitting the powershaft drive gear on the crank. 50 years of use and the clutch operating sleeve hitting it drove it out a bit. Took the pulley to a machine shop and they pressed the gear back on to where it was supposed to be and machined and tapped a hole and put a set screw in it to keep it in place. Maybe check that out on yours.

54/60,

I believe the position of the pulley assembly along the crankshaft is set by how far the clutch driver will fit on the splines of the crankshaft. If the splines on the crank or in the clutch driver are worn or damaged, the clutch driver (and the pulley assembly) will fit further up on the crank, and the two gears could rub together. To make a long story short, I would take a good look at your crank and clutch driver splines to see if they are damaged.
