I recently saw a 1953 model 60 that had an hour meter with circular face that was electrically powered from the ignition switch and fastened with a L shaped bracket by a couple of the bolts that hold the crankcase cover on. It faced to the right and could be read when standing by the pulley. Was that meter a John Deere option or an aftermarket add-on? I had never seen one before and it"s not listed in the 60 Parts Catalog.

I have a 50 that has an electric hour meter,
It faces to the right, mounted right in the side of the hood to the rear, you have to be standing by the clutch pully to read it.

My 2 60's both have the mechanical rpm hour meter driven off the govener.

I had a cable driven speedhour meter on my late A for a while but it finaly died. I mounted a 12 volt hobbs hour meter on the tach. bracket and powered it off of the battery side of the ignition coil. The meter droped right in the center hole of the bracket with just a little filing. It made a slick mount. I am currently restoring the tractor and will go back to a nos tack that I got a few years ago.

It was offered as an accessory in the accessory catalog. That meter is listed in the late "A" book, FWIW.

Frank,

hmm... I must be confused. I am aware that there is a little cap on the end of a model 50 governor housing above the flywheel cover. I have seen tachometers that have the cable from the end of the governor, and bolts to a bracket just above the flywheel cover.

This attachment was visible on the LEFT as you sat in the seat, i've never heard of a tach on the right side of the seat??

Not a tach/speed-hour meter, which measured each mechanical revolution of the crankshaft. It was a Stewart-Warner (I think that was the brand) HOUR meter. Ran on electric only, oil pressure switch used to power it on to ensure it operated only when the oil pump was operating. It was just 6 or 12 volt electric clock. Folks that liked to service based on actual clock hours mounted them. Useful when you had a lot of hired help operating the equipment. Most folks mounted them in the side of the hood just above the distributor/mag.

Thanks F-I-T, I have the "A" Parts Catalog and never thought to look there. Good info.

As a side piece of info, I see the "A" Parts Catalog has a note that says "For Service, send to John W. Hobbs Corporation, Springfield, Illinois". (in reference to the hour meter) Wonder if that is a relative to J.R. Hobbs of TWO-CYLINDER magazine staff?

I have also seen Hobbs hour meters on two cylinders. In fact, my 60 has one. I'm pretty sure it is a Hobbs. Stewart-Warners were also used. Josh

It was on the tractor when the original owner bought it (I'm the second). He wasn't sure if it was factory installed or dealer installed. I wish it still worked. Kinda neat. Josh

The electric hour meters weren't factory installed on Model "60s", they were always an attachment. However, there was a Service Bulletin published giving instructions on how and where to install it..
