when plowing yesterday it started to feel like the clutch was slipping on my 4440. It was in a middle of a strip not just starting out and i had plowed from 7-2 that day with no problem. It also has a cermic clutch which was installed 2 years ago. Let me know what u think and i did check my hydraulic fluid, and i am going to try changing the filter today. let me know what you think.

Mark all Waterloo tractors manufactured after '72 had Permaclutches(wet). This includes your 4230. Jim

not a lot of info to go on, but if its a powershift, and it slips in all gears, its probly the dampner. if its a quad, and it slips in 1 and 2, its the perma clutch, wet clutch. 1 but not two, or vice versa

It could be the main clutch on the flywheel or one of the "hi-low" clutches in the transmission. (Assumes that you have a quad range transmission)

The main clutch is applied by putting pressure to the clutch piston which pushes on the fingers and applies the clutch. Take pressure away to release. This same pressure is used to apply the cluch packs in the hi-low. If it is the hi-low, one side should hold and lug the engine. If it slips in both, it is likely the main clutch.

If the transmission oil is saturated with water, the facings of the main clutch can de-bond due to rust. You will find fiberous stuff in your filter. (ask me how I know this)

It could be low clutch apply pressure. Does the transmission light flash?

A ceramic clutch? Every 4440 with a transmission other than a Power Shift had a Perma-Clutch multiple-disk wet clutch.

Clutch is dry isn't it? Never had a 4440, have a 4230. So why would you be checking your hyd fluid?

I saw a buyer test a clutch one day. He put the tractor in a high gear and pushed in on the brakes, revved it up and let the clutch out slowly. If the engine loaded up the clutch was good.
