John Deere A or B price expectation

Good morning all. As where some of you are it is not so bone chilling. (About -20 here in central MN). I am new to this board as I am normally in the IH and Case boards. I have had this "voice" in the back of my head telling me I need to get another tractor. I am wondering what I should expect to pay for an Unstyled A or B. (Prefereably an A). Would like one in at least running condition, but does not have to be necessary. (Loose and complete at a bare minimum). I am located in central MN. I have nosed around a little in the classifieds and it seems they run between $1500-$5000. The $1500.00 seems like a bit to spend considering I can get a running IH M for $800-$1000. I know. Comparing apples to oranges here. Really love the "two poppers" (I have been watching YouTube videos for a couple months and can"t get over the awesome sound they have) and want to get my hands on an unstyled. Thanks a lot for all the replies.

Ken, I live in Ramsey here too. I paid around 2500.00 For a 1937 unstyled B here about 2 years ago, ran,etc needed some work, but the metal was all straight, that to me is the main thing to look for.
I,m always looking for a new one to work on here, looking for a 50-60 this year, you should drop me a line and let me know what you are looking for, If I find something I can always give you a heads up.

Hello Ken. I had a 35 B and a 37 A. Both were restored and in really great shape. The B had flat spoke wheels and the A had round spoke front and rear. The rears had been widened. I hated to sell them but I couldn't crank them over any more due to my back. I sold them both for $6250.00 and the man who bought them was really glad to get them. He also wanted to buy my 51 G but it's not for sale. Made me promise to give him first choice if I sell it. I priced it at $7000.00 I was told later by a collector that the price was too cheap for the G. I'm in central Ohio. I know the price varies greatly with the region. I'm thinking I'd like to have a late styled B to restore. rw

Hello Ron. I'm about 6 miles west of Grove City and about 1 mile south of Galloway. Thinking of ading a lathe in my shop if I can drum up enough work for it. I'm a retired machinist. rw

You should not overlook a good 520 or 620.. A 50 is a good choice, too... They do have more power and much better hydrolics and 3-point makes them more useful too.. I have a really good '52 "B" and a 520 and I can tell you, I use the 520 a whole lot more than the "B", and I LOVE that old B..I grew up on it..! As for power, the 520 and the B are about the same, but the B is +180", with a lot of compression.. The '20 series will lug down, just like an A or a B, and sound just as good while "working".. It may all depend on what you find, at the time..prices can be high or low..depends on how hard you look..! This year, I surprised a lot of people by successfully plowing with my 630 and 4x16" semi-mounted F-145 plow..even in alfalfa with Jack Wax in that field..! It was Great, listening to that Big Boy laboring in 2nd gear, with the front a few inches off the ground (carrying 250 lbs on the front) and kept right on going..!!

I remember that discussion on your plowing. LOL Others really gave it to you on that one. I never doubted you as I have pulled 3 with a late B . Just not something I'd do everyday just wanted to know what it could do.

Our "B" is +.180 and high compression and I would not even try to pull a 3-14"..!! Maybe in nice moist clay ground, maybe..! We have yellow wax and jack wax here, along with clay...the wax ground needs plowed when moist, or just about forget it..! Have you found the tractor you are looking for..?

Hi Ken, It sounds like you been doing your home work on the deeres. My advice would be keep looking, a deal you like will come along. Keep your eyes and ears open in less advertised areas, local thrifty adds and radio trading shows. When it comes along, move quickly with cash in hand. All brands of that old iron was made to work and last. Nothing sweeter than an old G with 3 14s down in the river bottom land, spring evening with sun going down. You can just hear that engine get stronger in the eveing air. Keep the faith, Dan in Shakopee (-19)
