Does anyone know the approximate number of shims originally included in the rod and main bearings of an unstyled B? Also, are each of these shims .003?

Robert, the thin shims are .003 inches each, and there should be onr thick one at .125 inch. Our model B had 5 shims on each side of both rods, and I removed two from each side to take up the bearing wear when I rebuilt the engine this fall. The oil clearance should be about .003, which you can check with plastigauge, which is available at almost any parts stor for three to five bucks.

You can also remove a couple of shims and assemble the rod onto the crank (do this before you put the rings on the pistons so you only get the friction of the bearings) and add (or remove) shims so the crank is either just free or is just hard to turn when the cap is tightened. Then, add one of the .003 shims to get the .003 oil clearance.

Have fun....
Terry
