Will the top gear on the power steering come up enough to turn it a half round without taking the whole housing loose and lifting up?This is the gear that the worm steering gear runs against.

JP88, I always used some tire tool to pry the housing up, after loosing the gear. The waived looking round housing may also lift up or it may not. The large O rings are between the top and bottom. Noting will all out but you may have an oil mess...I suppose the vane could get off the pins inside it you go too high...I wouldn't raise but enough to get the gear out...you might just be able to put back in position on current seals. If you have to replace seals I don't think you could get any on without removing the housing, don't thing you could stretch over the housing and get in place. Suppose if you doing a spot repair just raise enough to get the gear off then ease back in place and tighted good after finish, use some wood wedges or something to hold up while you work..

Mike is correct, not enought clearance unless you unbolt pedistal and raise housing.

Will anything drop out if I do raise the pedistal enough to lift the gear off the splines and turn it a half round?

Nothing will drop out but you will be unsealing an O ring and check this before lowering back down. That top nut is on pretty tight and in the past I've had to take a ball joint fork or a couple of chisels as prys to jar the gear loose. I'd do this before raising the pedistal housing. If you get it up a short ways so the gear will clear the splines you can then turn it 180. Word of caution, be sure to put some boards under the housing to keep it from falling...good way to loose some fingers...be careful...

I don't think it will come out unless you are taking the whole unit apart.
