This alternator has 2 posts one red and one black. It also has 2 plug in spade type connectors
one has an R by it and the other has an F

Please Help

Unless someone has already converted the tractor to a 12 volt starter, I'd be real inclined to leave it 24 volt charge with the original 24 volt generator. If it has a 12 volt starter, this job is a piece of cake but if the tractor still has the 24 volt cranking system the only way you can use a 12 volt GM alternator is to pick one with an external regulator. These alternators have the plug entering the end of the frame with two blades parallel to each other like 11 instead of internally regulated with the blades in line on the side like --. You'll have to INSULATE the alternator frame from the tractor! That includes the belt tensioner bracket! You'll have to wire both the frame of the alternator and it's normal output wire to the batteries, alternator frame to the - cable of the tractor, the normal alternator output to the + battery cable. Leaving the "between the batteries" Deere ground installed like original. You'll then have to modify the external mechanical regulator raising the voltage to from 27 to 28.2 volts by increasing the regulator spring tension inside. Most NEW replacement regulators are now solid state and you'll not be able to modify one of those. You'll have to mount the regulator on the alternator or insulate it from the tractor's frame then run a wire from the frame of the insulated regulator to the frame of the insulated alternator. Since the tractor's ignition switch is wired to just one of the batteries, you won't have proper excitation for the alternator through the key switch unless you install a normally open relay that connects the 24 volt regulator/alternator excitation circuit when you turn the key. You'll have to install a series current limiting resistor in this circuit to keep from roasting the field windings. I'd start by putting about a 4 ohm 20 watts resistor in series with the field and measure the voltage at the field terminal of the alternator with the key on, engine not running. Add resistance if you measure over half system voltage from here to alternator frame, remove resistance if you measure less than half. After you get all this wired up, it's still anybody's guess how reliable it would be because the regulator was not designed to break this high a voltage in the field circuit. It might work a week it might work ten years. There is one more thing you need to know. ANY METAL THAT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH BOTH THE ALTERNATOR FRAME AND THE TRACTOR'S FRAME IS A DEAD SHORT THROUGH THE ALTERNATOR ACROSS ONE BATTERY..... that is UNTIL SOMETHING BURNS UP! THAT WILL USUALLY BE THE ALTERNATOR DIODES! Not nice! Looking at all this work to install a dangerous system on a fine machine like a 4010, I think you can see why I agree with the other guy that said don't $%*&@## with it. I'm sorry to say I don't remember his name but I think he gave excellent advice! Even if you had a 24 volt alternator with a solid state internal regulator, it would be simpler but you'd still need to insulate the alternator from the tractor and install the relay.

TO MAKE THANGS SEMPEL IF YOUR TRACTOR IS 24V
YOU CAN GO TO DEERE AND GET A 24V ALT THAT IS ALLREADY ISOLATED FROM THE FRAME AND WILL WIRE UP LIKE THE OLD GEN,THE ALT IS FROM A 4020 WITH A\C
WILL HAVE TO BY A NEW PULLY TO. ROBERT

Major things to consider. If its gas its 12 volt positive ground. You have to switch the battery polarity before you use a standard alternator. If its diesel you need a 24 volt alternator/regulator with both outputs floating or you need to convert the diesel to 12 volts negative ground. JD sells a kit for that that I think includes the alternator and a new starter. About $600, before installation.

You need to fit a pulley to the existing fan belt. The GM pulley probably won't be wide enough and the 4010 generator pulley will be too large and not spin the alternator fast enough.

IF YOU HAVE TO BY AN ALT. GET WHAT THAY CALL A DELCO ONE WIRE. IT WILL BE EZER TO INSTALL,TAPE OFF OLD WIRES TO GEN. AND RUN NEW WIRE FROM BAT TERN ON ALT TO BAT TERM ON STARTER. ROBERT

Justin, any idea what that alternator came out of. Those arn't standard sounding terminals for an (internal regulator) car type G.M. alternator. If it is out of a pre-mid 70's G.M. car ( my guess is it did) it will need a regulator to go with it. I will give you the wire positions for an "external regulator" maybe that will help you determine which alt. you have....The (f) goes to the (f) on the regulator...the (r) can be left open...the #3 terminal on the regulator goes to the reg. position on the ign. s/w( I doubt you have that terminal so you will have to use accessory or ign. If you want to put an indicator light on it E-Mail me I will have to find one of my (old) books & reserch it for you.If you don't have the regulator for this alternator I wouldn't buy one I would put the money towards a G.M. internal reg. alternator

Justin, two things I should have mentioned are, if your alternator has the connector for the (2) spade terminals on the back of the end frame it uses an external regulator, if the terminals are on the side of the end frame it uses an internal regulator. Also some of those mid 70's G.M. alternators use a solid state (electronic) regulator.

WHAT YOU HAVE IS A EXTERNAL REGULATED DELCO ALT.
AS CLOONEY SAID GO GET A INTERNAL REGULATED DELCO. ABOUT $26 AT AUTOZONE OR CHECKER.
