I am restoring a john deere 60 and i pulled it out of the shop yesterday. and it moves back and forth good but when i idle it up and put it in second gear or higher it makes a howling or loud growling noise. After a couple of minutes now it does it in all gears even reverse. The clutch was to loose and i adjusted it up and it still makes noise. I am wondering if it is in the clutch or tranny. If i step on the brakes it goes away. Does anybody have any ideas. I have new bearings on the first reduction gear and a total rebuit clutch.
thanks in advance
John

I did rebuild the brakes. So i must have the shaft in to far or not out far enough.

Will it make this noise in neutral with the clutch in and out ? You can get some noises going on if the dust shield is not centered around the pulley.

I had the same noises in a G. Sounded like the noise was in the clutch or the 1st reduction gear. So I tore into the tranny and found nothing and this is after I had the clutch apart. I rebuilt the brakes and the noisr went away. Bottom line is that the noise will travel and is hard to locate. You ansered your own question when you said you put your foot on the brakes and the noise quit. Just my thoughts Bill
