More light problems on my John Deere 60 I hooked the ignition switch the way it showed me in the manual. And the lights only come on with the switch on D. And after a minute the resistor starts to smoke and get hot. None of the wires are bare or touching. Does any body know what my problem might be.
It is a gasoline regular s/n 43755

I notice this posting requires me to scroll across the screen to view the complete posting, while the topics above and below this one don't - however, they are not all the same width either. Inquiring minds wonder why? Thanks for any explanations!

If someone posts a picture that is wider than your screen, it forces everything (including the text) wider to match.

On postings with no pictures, the text stays the width of your screen. With small pictures, you won't have to scroll either. But the wiring diagram Frank posted makes everything too wide, thus the need to scroll over.

Boy I'm long winded.

Thanks, Brandon - but... if I just pick my previous question it all falls on my screen. If I pick the original question it requires scrolling. Perhaps the original question did not require scrolling until the picture in a reply causes all responses to be the size of the picture?

It's only an issue if I want to print something off for a notebook.

You said: "Perhaps the original question did not require scrolling until the picture in a reply causes all responses to be the size of the picture?"

That's correct!

It's a "once-the margin-is-moved-it's-moved-for-all".

With people complaining over how difficult these schematics and diagrams are to read, I thought I'd make sure that it was big enough!

I have to agree with the Frankster, I DONT THINK ITS WIRED CORRECT.... The fact the lights ONLY come on in D tells you right off somethings astray..... If youre not sure of the switch you have you have to ohm it out to figure out what terminals are doing what and in which switch position they are closing and figue out where that dimming resistor comes into play. Its not really that hard to figure if you have a continuity checker and take notes as to what happens to a terminal in what position.

The switch has to have a BAT input terminal that receives power from an ammeter or VR,,,,, ,,,it has to have an I ignition terminal that powers up the coil in any n all positions other then OFF,,,,, ,,then light terminals buttttt ttttt ttt in the D position the resistor is in the circuit but NOT in brights.

A picture is worth a thouand words so take Franks picture and a tester and it should be easy to figure it out and ifffff fffff???? you have the right switch wire it as it needs to be to work even if that isnt how you understod the manual.....should be a PIECE OF CAKE

Let us know what happens

Best Wishes n Happy New Year

You either have a wiring mistate or you could have a wrong switch. It has been known for a diesel pony start switch to make it's way onto a '60'dash....

First you should have only one wire running from the center of the switch up to the ammeter. This powers the switch in the center.

Second, you should have power to the coil at all I,B,D positions because the coil needs powered even with the lamps are on bright or dim or off.

Next, the FLOOD terminal is for the rear white lamp and the TAIL terminal is for the red rear lamp. The RH and LH front lamps connect to the lower terminal of the resistor bridge (as weoll as the dash lamp), with the resistor running between that lower and upper terminal. This works so that the resistor is only in play when the switch is turned to "D" -Dim, which drops the voltage through the resistor to make dim or low beams for road driving (with a red tail lamp glowing). You might want to unhook the rear lamps wiring and the front lamps wiring, and then check that you have 12 volts at the lamp terminals except that you will have a reduced voltage on the head lamp terminals when you switch to "D". I included a semi-colorized diagram, but I did not try to make it the correct factory colors as I don't know what you used for colors on wires. I just wanted it to standout.

HTH

Frank
