I am in the process of wiring my John Deere 60. I got a wire harness from mother deere for the generator. It has a white wire that goes to the generator and a green wire that goes to the coil. It also has a brown wire. I dont have a place for the brown wire to go on the switch. Can anybody tell me what the brown wire is for. and if i need it. The tractor s/n is 43755 if that helps at all.
thanks in advance John

I dont have a lug on the switch for a ground wire. so i guess i will have to tape up the ends of the brown wire and put it aside.
thanks for the help guys.
John

Ive seen different markings on those switches, n you have to have the CORRECT switch. Perhaps it may be labeled MAG or GRND something like that if its indeed the one Frank mentions used to prevent a spark when cranking even when the Ignition is OFF which runs from that switch terminal down to the low (to distributor) side of the coil...

Unless the 60 is an LP model it doesn't have bypass starting which on gas models began with the 20 series.

I have a model 50 and it does have the bypass starting if we are talking about the same thing when we say bypass starting.

It was a field service bulletin advisement and was included in all the wiring harnesses made after that. It's an easy two wires to add to improve starting and as a safe guard. I think the diesel ponies were the first to use by-pass ignition.

Thats one problem with those darn 2029 wiring diagrams, they had a one size fits all which isnt necessarily correct for alllll ll models.

Here's a wiring diagram from the SM02029 and a link. Looks like the Brown comes from the far side of the coil back to the switch to a grounded lug. It's there to prevent the engine starting when cranking, switch off. Otherwise the bypass wire from the starter will power the coil when the foot pedal is depressed. A child or unsuspecting adult could fire the engine just by depressing the pedal if not for that wire.
