John Deere LA Won't Start

Engine has about 10 hours run time since complete rebuild. The tractor has been starting and running great until recently. It is getting fuel, and it is getting spark. It runs about 2 or 3 revolutions, backfires loudly shooting flame out the exhaust pipe and quits, refusing to start. Earlier, the sparkplugs would soot up and engine would quit after running fine for about 30 minutes. I can't hear any impulse click from the mag when trying to start it. Could this be a cause for this type of hard starting problem? The Magneto has been professionally rebuilt. Any help with this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

Without clicks I don't think there is any spark coming down the wires. I would check for spark and see if you have some. If you don't get that problem fixed before worrying about the plugs.

Since it has soot sounds like something funky is going on. I would make sure the cylinders are filling with fuel, see if the plugs are wet, check the timing and I would look into some hotter plugs which should help it burn the gas better. Fresh gas always helps too.

Check your timing first .. then contact the folks who rebuilt the mag...oops'''float level in the carb!! might be sticking....is the gas fresh? ..could be a varnish issue..think basic first...hope this helps...
