Have to excuse me, I'm a Farmall lover. So I don't know a whole lot about this. I like the "squatty" tractors. I came upon what I'm told is a John Deere AO. Now comes the questions. The serial number tag says it's an A. Serial number 279126. The motor is stuck, rear rims and tires are junk, the fenders that are left on it, I would call clam shell fenders, that are like on W series IH, is this right for this tractor? Seems to be complete. What would be a fair price?, or should I just run? I also know where I can buy 3 BO's. One that runs, one that will run, and one parts tractor. Thinking about buying these ones to resell. They are missing the fenders. And have cast rear hubs. What might be a fair price for these? Never done much with John Deeres so I'm new to this side of the world. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Got the AO home today. Back rims and tires are junk. Motor is stuck. Rear fenders have quite a few holes rusted in them, but I think they could be fixed. Still has some antifreeze in it, as it started to leak out, I think by the bottom hose by the radiator. It does have hydraulics. Hood is straight. Front grill top is pretty decent too. Thinking about putting on Ebay or maybe trying here on the photo ads. Or might be worth more in parts. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

460 - I've had about 8 of them critters in the past few years. Turned out to be a lot more work that I had time for. You can also rack up big bucks getting them all done.

As for what they're worth, depends if they are all fuel or gas. Also, the front nose piece is REALLY expensive if you either can't salvage that one, or as is often the times, it's missing.

- The orchard tin will run you $4-5k per tractor. - Your other questions about it being an AO or AR. When these were sold, you could buy the AO without the orchard sheet metal, but it would come with the AO hood, intake. I don't think there's any records on how it was shipped. The other thing is that since it went to orchards, it got doused with chemicals day in and day out. The orchard metal may be all eaten up, or if like many things, it ever had to come off for repair, it might not have gotten put back on.

I've seen them sell restored for as low as $8k and as high as $14k. Median price seems to be $10-12k, but you'll probably have 7-8 in them if you paint them yourself. And loads of time.

With the serial number you mentioned, it is definitely either a Model AR or AO,part of the 1952 production run. (PatB)

Thanks for response. I think this maybe a "hybred". As I said before, it has AR rear fenders and an AO hood. I think.. Don't want to sound mean but don't want to reveal location of tractor at this time. I let a guy know about an "R" I was going to buy, he couldn't get there fast enough to beat me out of it. I can buy them all for $2500.00. Talked to a few other John Deere collectors, they said I could make my money back plus some just in parts. So I'm going to start hauling them home on Saturday. Thanks again.

That sounds like it should work out quite well for you -- and hey -- I wholeheartedly agree that to give someone else a bead on things you are seeking is foolish! Why invite competition? (PatB)

I was just curious. You didn't have to say in xyz city. Western US or Northern would have worked. I was just curious since they seem somewhat hard to come by in CA. Unless the person would take a $1 for the thing, they would be out of my price range.

As far as the A is concerned, it didn't matter what shape it came in (AN, ANH, AO, AW, etc) it still said A on the serial tag. If you want to check if it really is an AO you could post a pic here or have a history check run (costs a few bucks). I think it is the 2 cylinder club.

In terms of value it depends on lots of things like sheetmetal condition, what sheetmetal it has, what all is missing etc.

In regards to the BO it all depends on codition, completeness, originalness and pocket book size.

Where are these things located? (just curious)
