I just found that the bearing with the copper sleeve that the weights pushed against is bad. I have it all apart. I was just wondering if anyone has replaced this part and if they are still available from deere. If anyone has a part number that would be helpful or I will just have to wait until I can get to the dealer. Also when you go to line up the governor for reinstallation do you leave the side cover off to see the alignment marks?

Thanks,
Josh

Josh,

Be sure to remove the mag before reassemblying the governor into the housing. Many mags have been broken by tighting the cover on the governor without having the mag removed and drive lugs are not lined up with the drive slots.

Josh,
That would be the thrust bearing, C998R, available from Deere for about $28. Regarding governor timing - the only timing issue is getting the magneto drive slot in the correct position - that is done by turning the engine until the flywheel side piston (actually, either piston is ok) is at top dead center, then installing the governor shaft such that the magneto drive slot (located on the pulley end of the governor shaft) is as close to horizontal as you can get it. Those timing marks can be tricky to find and if the tractor has been worked on there someone may have made additional timing marks to confuse things.

Is the copper bushing supposed to be driven out of the bearing? I looked at the part on jd parts online and it didn't look right. Thanks for giving me the part number. The tractor is roughly a 1942 model with slant dash if that makes a difference.

Josh,
Yes, one of the races is (lightly) pressed on to the sliding sleeve - it should be easy to press the old one off and new one on. That bearing number was used for many governors, starting with the GP.
