Yesterday I read a post by someone who hit the nail on the head regarding why the "B" transmission tends to slip out of the high gears. My question now is with what was mentioned about the Model 50 transmission having an "interlock" to prevent this. Does anyone have anymore particulars on this?? ie, which parts to swap, etc? Are the parts still available from JD or do we have to trace down scrap yards, etc? Are these parts interchangeable with the B directly? Thanks.

forgot to say, you can do anything you want to, to the pins and detents, put little washers under them, stretch spring, it still want stay in if that spline is work, you can't hold the shifter lever and keep it in. In a real hard pull in 1st which is the same spot as 3rd, it will slam out if it is badly worn...

John, his tractor is jumping out of the higher gears according to his post. That usually means it is the underdrive-overdrive gear set, or worn bearings.

John, late 50's & 520-530's had an interlock as standard equiptment. I think John Deere offered a repair kit to install the inter lock parts in the earlier tractors. If J.D. still had the kit & I doubt they do, it would be very expensive. It would be MUCH cheaper to get them from a parts tractor. Before you go to all that trouble try to bring your shifter detents & shift shafts up to good condition. Also make sure you don't have any loose or severly worn bearings. I have owned a few old "B's" and always been able to make them stay in gear if the bearings are OK, but I have had to stretch the detent springs and rework the worn notches in the shift shafts. You will probably have to get a parts book to cross reference the parts you will have to change. Probably be shift lever, hi-lo (underdrive) shift fork maybe underdrive shift shaft & some springs & pins etc. Let me know & I will scan you a 520 parts page to compare to yours.

what makes the B,older 50's jump out of gear is that they're pulled hard in 3rd gear...it wears a bevel at the place where the gear rides on the upper shaft, eventually this bevel or indented place make the gear move when pulled hard...if you look at that shaft you will see the place where this exists...you may need to find a better shaft and also replace the bearings, I've done 3or four and then also put the locking shifter in. The gear is harder than the shaft....

EVER DONE A 60? BROKE A SHIFT FORK (4TH GEAR I THINK) AND COULDN'T MATCH IT UP. THE GUY AT 2-CYLINDER PLUS TOLD ME THAT THE 60'S WERE BAD ABOUT JUMPING OUT OF GEAR AND A KIT WAS DEVELOPED TO FIX IT. THE 620 TRANS WAS THE SAME THING SO IF PARTS ARE NEEDED FOR A 60 620 PARTS CAN BE SUBSTITUTED IF IT IS A LATE MODEL OR "KITTED" 60.
