i have a 54 jd 60 and i was woundering if there is supposed to be any play between the splines of the clutch drive disk and the clutch slideing drive disk because i have a lot of play in mine and there is a tooth missing on the drive disk.
I also have a very loud clanking sound comming from my clutch. Now when the tractor is in neutral and the clutch is engaged the noise is gone, when the clutch is dissengaed and in neutral the noise comes back, also when in gear and the clutch engaged. The tractor seems to drive fine but the noise is concerning me.
Thanks 54/60

the crank splines and clutch splines could be bad if at one point the center bolt was loose.that will make alot of noise. just pull the bolt out and check .

The clutch cover is on, and another thing that is odd is when i first bought the tractor the clutch never made a single noise, and the one bolt in the center that holds everthing in place was loose i tightened it up and it reduced the noise but the noise is still there also the flywheel is tight. Thanks 54/60

I have much the same issue with my 52 A. After repairing the clutch splines (welding-last resort before removing crank) which were really messed up, the noise developed. The welding fixed the loose driver but now the pulley rotation is slightly out of round. My best guess is that the sliding disk is rattling on the driver splines. With the clutch cover off the racket is significant. I would check to see if the flywheel is tight though. Good luck.

Is the clutch pulley cover off? With the cover on most of that noise will stay inside the pulley and you won't hear it. Jim

Most of them rattle when the clutch is decompressed. Those floaters get tight against the driven side of the tooth as the clutch pack comes into compression. I would not worry about it. They jingle, jingle, or klink-klink all the time when disengaged. Those four lining clutch packs have a lot more moving, rather floating, parts than the older two facing units. Keep it engaged when idling. It makes things last a lot longer since the clutch roller bearing is only turning and wearing when the clutch is disengaged.
