I am about to replace the rod bearings on a model 50, where can I find the crank specs? I want to know if I need oversize bearings or not, but thats a little hard to determine if I don't know the factory diameter of the crankshaft.

I fotgot to say that mains are a nightmare...short of a machine shop not much you can do and proper clearnace a must. I wouldn't worry much about them if they are smooth.

Was curious to know more about the "nightmare" of the main bearings. Would this mean a nightmare to replace? I am getting ready to replace the crankshaft in my 1951 B, (I got an excellent used one on e-bay, mics out to spec, no eggshape on journals) and I will be looking hard at the rod and main bearings.

thanks,

Kurt

as I recall JD offered some .002 oversize but you have to be careful. Best to plasti gauge, but remember that egg shapping the biggest problem so measure at several points. I lean with a little more clearance than too tight a clearance. Oil will take up 2 thousands without any problem....

Thanks Earl,, I hope new rod bearings are the cure for this old gal, There is allot of play in the old ones. The oil pressure is good and it don't smoke, so I am praying the main bearings are stiil good.

Rod brg clearance .002-.004 Main brg clearance is .004-.006 Don't try & fit up too tight on clearance.I lean to the middle on the clearance. Pistons & cyl depend upon the rod brg throw off for lubrication. The oiling system is high volume, lower pressure.

Thanks again for the technical info, I really need to invest in some shop manuals. I will mic
the crank in the morning and see where I stand.
