New grade 8 studs & nuts plus hardened washers. The old ones are stretched and will not clamp down the head without distortion/warping/insufficient pressure. Cranking the old ones down tighter won't work.

I would say your leak is coming from the cracked block. Have a 70 that was doing the same thing. Block was cracked on the face from a head bolt to the bore. That block was also sleeved in one cylinder. It would blow water out the exhaust if it sat. At first thought it too was a head gasket, replaced it and still the same deal. Ended up getting a different block.

I wouldn't worry about the sleeve- I'd say more then likely its the head gasket, clean it up torque it down (210lbs) and retorque after you run it a few times. I've got sleeves in both holes and they are holding fine.

Thanks! This tractor seems to be sleeved on one cylinder. There is a crack on the face of the block and it appears to go back through the water jacket. I think the sleeve is the repair for the crack. The crack was not welded. I pulled the head to replace the head gasket as I thought it was seepy. Once in a while you could smell antifreeze upon startup. Tractor has good power and no smoke. Guys, what is your opinion? Try it one more time with a new head gasket?? Thanks, andy

I have no experience with that engine. But assuming that the cooling system is not pressurized, all that is needed is to contain the coolant where it is supposed to be. At the ends of the sleeve, I would use the Permatex #2 (nonhardening) to fill the block crack outside the sleeve. Really pack it in there. Then install the head and run it.
