Can anyone tell me if I can remove the block on my 1935 unstyled A so I can replace the gasket, without splitting off the front frame? I have it loose and can get it to within about 1/2" from being off the studs, but I have worked for 2 hours and it seems to be hitting something. Thanks

Thanks for the info. Went to the grocery store (well, actually told my wife to pickup) and got a brand new box of sandwich baggies when I started this project and everything goes in a bag and marked with Sharpie! Dare

Was working on one recently and had to loosen the front end to get it out. Seems to me (if my memory serves me correct) there is tab on the bottom of the block that catches on the front support piece that goes between both rails.

On the real early A JD you have to take the frame loose to remove the block. The real early blocks are wider then the frame. This means that you have to slide the frame forward to allow the block to come forward. The easiest way we have found to do this is put some longer bolts in the bottom of the frame to main case to serve as a guide. You will have to block up the main case and take wieght off of the frame before you slide it forward. If you dont take the weight off you will break the frame. On a little later tractors they ground the block down to prevent you from having to do all this.

Yep, that worked. The welding was just an illusion, wasn't acutally welded together. No oil, but did have to remove fan shaft. It might have come out without removing, but made it a whole lot easier to just take it off. Thanks to everyone who responded!

Dare -- If it isn't too late, bag & tag the gasket/shim stock removed from the joint of the fan shaft with the governor -- helps in the later part of putting back together -- replication!

For more on this subject, see the site below on governors. (PatB)

The hood and fan shaft will need to come off so the block will lift up and out.

Did you take the oil line loose? And yes it will come out of there if you hold your tongue right?

There isn't a oil line on an unstyled A that needs to be unhooked. That block will need to come ahead, then tilted up to remove.Remove the water pipe on the top of the block. It should come out with the fanshaft installed.

Forgive me for my mistake. The I&T manual says remove the oil line and the fan shaft, both of which you said are not necessary.

You know we've had the discussion before that I&T manuals are sub standard.. LOL But seriously I&T often does not discuss unstyled directly, but rather they would say A tractors before SN XXXXX X which by serial number may include unstlyed all the while the info may be for the early styled only. I suppose this is one instance.

So what is the SN break for tractors with a block that can be extracted without unbolting the frame?

Thanks for clearing that up!

wilamayb,
The original I&T hardbound manual printed in 1948 does include the unstyled Deere's. The section on cylinder block R&R for Series A (410000-488000) - Series B(B1000-96000) does not mention disconnecting the tappet oiler line, while the following section on the later series A and B has the DISCONNECT tappet... in large print. The hardbound version does show up on eBay occasionally. JD-1, copyrighted in 1953, dropped the unstyled series information, and JD-4 was copyrighted later in 1953 and dropped the flat rate info from JD-1.

You are correct, NO oil line on the old ones & it will come out without taking the fan shaft off. Some of theses guys have never worked on the old ones. The original operators manuals have a step by step guide on this. Always get a manual & READ before you ruin good parts

35A...The two manuals I have didn't have this procedure listed. They may not be the true original manuals, though. Do you know where I could get one? Thanks, Dare

There is no manual for those.

Maybe if we all talk nice to Pat he will write one. He did one for the model H that didn't have one either.
