I have a JD 4320 that I use as my main tractor on 200 acres I pull a 21ft 235 JD disk with 21" cone blades. I know I am asking way to much from this tractor but as long as I don't have to pull up much of a hill it does a wonderful job, I already have cylinder stops on the disk to keep it from going in the ground to far, plenty of weight on the front and the rear and 20.8 34's dualed up so traction is not a problem. I am thinking about turning the pump up to get more power and was wanting some input from you guys. The only thing holding me back from turning it up is overheating as it runs with the temp needle right at the redline when I'm pulling hard, I have already had the radiator repaired so the cooling system is in good shape. What are your thoughts?

We bought a 4320 used in about 1978. It was a very strong tractor, but would overheat if pulled hard. We went through everything cooling system related, and it still got hot. We finally talked to the guy who traded it in, and found out that he had been pulling it at all the local fairs. The dealer dyno'd it for us, and it was sitting at 185hp. We had it turned back to about 135, and the problems were gone. I wouldn't push it much harder than that, and I would have it dyno'd. Good luck.

First get your cooling issue takin care of. Make sure everything is up to snuff and clean. (radiator, water pump, thermostat, coolant) Also a dirty air filter can cause the tractor to run hot.
We've had 4320s sit on the dyno all day and not reach there cooling limit. You should not go up in power until you get this problem fixed.
Next get the tractor dynoed and see what its making for power.
I've seen 175hp or more on 4320s on the dyno with the pumps turned up and many people have run years on them like that. I know we do and still runs great and makes field work much easier.
hope this helps.

First I'd do is to have the HP checked on it and see where it is at now. If it is low fix it and get it up to specs. then if it still isn't enough get a bigger tractor.

Get a smaller disk instead of ruining the tractor.

I have had a 4320 now for 20+ years on my farm. Not my main heavy pulling tractor but it is the one that gets used the most. It has not been turned up but puts out 135 hp on the dyno. I think most stock 4320's put out way more than the rated 117. This tractor is my favorite and does everything I ask of it. If you are pulling such a big disk for it already and running it close to the red line, I don't think it will be your main tractor for very long if you decide to turn it up some more. I personnally think the 4320 is one of the best tractors JD ever built and it would be a shame to ruin such a fine tractor

If you're near the red line now, common sense says that turning the pump up will destroy it.

I agree, she sounds like a cranked up injection already. In any case dialing an engine up past rated specs shortens engine and drivetrain life. Time to either gear down, narrow the implement or get a larger tractor. So many people like a 4020 and pay rediculous buckas for them. For less money the 4320 will walk all over a 4020. Then again for similar money one may as well get a 4430 and have a decent cab to sit in and have 16 gears.

I got the cab- just dont have 16 gears-

Your pulling ALOT of disk for a 4320 I've got a 18' and usually just stick that on the 4620 instead of pulling the 4320 hard. I'd say get a smaller disk-bigger tractor or get ready for some bigger repair bills.
This is the 2nd 4320 we've owned- both of them have been WAY underrated at 117- if your getting hot now its already turned up- probably in that 150 range.
