I am looking at a 4010 to buy but trans is stuck in reverse

Is the shift lever physically stuck in that position, or is it possible to move the lever to neutral, but the tranny remains in reverse?

If the lever is simply stuck, disconnect the rod down below, at the shift arm, and see what's stuck... up above, or down below.

If it's down below, and the tractor has sat outside a long time, it COULD be just the shifter shaft stuck in the case by rust.

Otherwise, if it's INTERNAL, it could be a broken shift fork or cam, or shift collars and sychronizers on the trannie's topshaft worn, broken, or out of place.

Also, if there's a possibility the tractor has been towed without being shifted into the "TOW" position, gear(s) and/or shift collars on the topshaft may have been welding in place due to overheating from lack of lube.

the linkage moves but will not shift in the trans
