Hi guys,
I saw a picture of a 420U in highway orange in the october issue of green magizine as it was talking about the 420 tractors. I have only seen 2-3 others during my many years of searches. I was curious to know if anybody knows how many orange 420U's were built, are orange JD tractors rarer/ more desirable then the yellow ones?? I am not knocking the yellow ones by any means either since I have a yellow one. I was just curious to see the different opinions on the orange JD's.
Thanks
John Deere Jeff

Not nearly as many orange tractors as yellow, for sure, but the exact number is difficult to calculate. Reason is, some tractors got the orange paint along with some other modification, and therefore didn't get the CJ 266 designation that means a color other than regular JD green and yellow or Industrial Yellow. At least there are records for the two-cylinder tractors. There are no records concerning paint color for the NG tractors.

I don't think they kept very good records on tractor color. The yellow ones had a custom job number 265,the orange ones 266.Some used the
tangier (spelling not sure),orange. That was kind of a burnt orange color. Some used the brighter highway orange. Both were General motors colors from back around 1949.If they were sold through the industrial division the yellow or orange color wasn't recorded because those were
standard industrial colors,(not special order.)If an ag tractor was ordered orange or yellow, then it was assigned a custom job number.I have an orange 430T with a 266 custom job number, and a yellow 1010 that has no record of being yellow, according to the two cylinder serial number research.
