I have a 1964 4020 diesel. Recently the 3 point hitch stopped working. It seems to have pressure on the remote outlets and steering and brakes work OK. At first the cable that operates the 3 point control was stuck, after disconnecting the cable I could get the 3 point arms to raise one time and then they quit. Any help is appreciated!

Just behind the lever that you unhooked the cable from is a small set of sectors and a pinion gear. Sometimes with the cable off, it is possible to move the lever far enough to disengage the sector, and then reengage on the wrong tooth, when the lever is moved back the other way. This puts the travel in the wrong place to open the valves. If you think this might be the trouble remove the hydraulic filler pipe, hold the pinion gear in place with a screw driver, unscrew the large nut benind the lever, pull the lever out and reposition it. It may take a couple trys to hit the right tooth.

Seems to me you had two problems. First the cable, then the check valve on the transmission pump that primes the main hydraulic pump has failed so the main pump runs out of oil unless the tractor is in gear and moving.

There are two solutions for the check valve. The hardest is to go into the transmission and fix the one inside. There is a JD service information that suggests making the oil elbow right behind the transmission oil filter into a check valve. The parts cost under $15.

Service Information R.84-70-2

R39075 seat which converted to R68553
D2361R Ball
R39078 Spring
R39076 Guide

I'll try to send scans of my notes that I copied from a microfiche version of that service information and the parts bill, if your e-mail can accept .JPG attachments.

GERALD. I respectfully disagree. larry says he has power steering and brakes, and remote hyd. but does not have 3point.which means the trans pump is working. the trans pump is driven as long as the engine is running and the tractor does not have to be moving.however steering and brakes do have priority and if the trans.pump is not pumping sufficient flow the hyd.will not operate, but with the tractor sitting still it would not have a requirement for hyd. to the steering or brakes.

I WAS IN ERROR IN MY LAST POST, IT IS THE 4230 ETC. THAT THE TRANS PUMP IS TURNING ALL THE TIME THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.0N A 4020 THE PUMP WILL TURN WHENEVER THE CLUTCH IS ENGAGED.

Did you completely remove the cable? if so when you put it back did you get the clamp that is to the rear of the rockshaft in its locating groove and the clamp completely tight if the cable came loose from the groove the 3 point wont work.

I have the cable disconnected and operated the hydrolic from the arm the cable attaches to at the rear of tractor. It worked one time and then quit.

Larry under the seat on the right hand side there is a short metal lever made from sheet metal with a rolled in. move this lever then try the three point again
