I'm going through this with a 50. The reason I didn't sell my tractor and buy another with power steering is I know my tractor is in excellent condition. I also got the parts cheap. When I'm finished with this tractor I'll start looking for a 60 with power steering. Then I'll have 2 two cylinder tractors. It's not an easy decision,at least it wasn't for me.

One could make a change over if you have a parts tractor as previously posted....whewwww what a chore....while I"m not discouraging you it may be cheaper to buy a 60 with good P.S. and sell your"s like it is. I come from many power steering jobs and parts and materials are hard to find and very very expensive.....

You need a donor tractor if you plan on doing that type of swap with Deere parts. You may want to look into some aftermarket units like Behlen, Charlynn (spelling?) or an M&W. Not all of these goups made units for Deere's tractors. My memory always fails me for who made a unit to fit what brand of tractor. I bet the older gents here could open our eyes on that subject.

Whatever type you get will need work. They will leak and be weak. It may be easier to get parts for the Deere system than some of the aftermarkets.

If this is not a family tractor you may want to just trade it off for a unit with PS. Some folks dont mind for parade tractor use. Without a loader they are not to bad with manual steering. I've always felt bad for the guy with the 70 without powersteering.

I have the CharLynn system on a 70 LP and it is better than any factory system I have used. And the CharLynn torque thing, basically the PS motor, is still available new and parts are readily available, probably cheeper than anything from MA Deere. I found this out when talking to a welding shop just down the road, he carries most of the parts in stock. I bought my setup off ebay, it came off a 70 originally and it is wonderful. I actually prefer it to the Deere system on my 720. There is no fooling with it to get it to turn both ways with equal pressure, ya just mount it and hook hydraulic pressure up to it and the PS works. The only bad thing is the appearance of the system. But with some engineering this winter that problem is going to be solved. I have picked up all of the factory pump parts for a 70, which will get rid of the side mounted pump. And with a little work on the radiator top tank, the PS motor is going to be mounted under the hood just like the Farmalls were. It will look completely factory till the nose comes off. I have purchased a Behlens system also, with intent to put it on my 46 A with the 45W on it but once the CharLynn went on the 70 and worked so well, the 45W was moved to that tractor. I am now planning on using the Behlen system on a 52 AO. Its dimensions and closeness to the live hydraulic pump will make it any easy match. I believe Yetter(?) also made a aftermarket PS kit for the 2 cylinders, I have only seen 2 of these, they are large units similiar to the Behlens system.

I actually got to work on a 70 with manual steering for a guy. It had the larger 4 spoke steering wheel and it wasn't that bad to steer. The steering was not worn out either which I'm sure helped alot. Even a small tractor with worn out steering can be a bear to steer.

You are right. They really bind up when tolerances get a little too sloppy.

I'll still take a sloppy, nearly worn out power steering unit over a fresh manual steer when there's a picker or 4-row cults on the front. P/S made so much difference in ease of operation.

You would be much better off (time and money wise) just buying a 60 that has power steering from the factory.
