1956 JD 60 has Engine knock which only happens when the engine is hot and the engine is at low rpm with a heavy load, such as when you start out under a load or the engine is pulled down because of a heavy load.I have set the timing back and added disiel to the gas to prevent pre-ignition. I believe it maybe the engine main bearings. Is there an easy way to determine if the main bearings are loose or may the problem be something else.

If you've checked the rod bearings, I'd next check the piston pins. If loose, they sometimes make noise under load but not at idle, more at low speed than at high. I found this to be the trouble with a '41B. Used a dial indicator with a long feeler through the spark plug hole. With the piston someplace other than TDC yet within reach of the feeler, you should not be able to turn the crank without seeing a change on the indicator. Rock the crank back and forth a small amount using a screwdriver on the ring gear. Look for simultaneous movement of the pistons and crank. With this long feeler the readings will not be true on the indicator but you're looking for immediate movement more than how much it moved. If you have the crank case open, feel off the piston skirts. More accurate.

I have 2 all fuel A's and an H. I regularly burn some Diesel in all of them. If I get too much Diesel in the mix they'll have a spark knock like you wouldn't beleive! It is a LONG way from the spark knock or ping you'll hear in a truck or car. Sounds real nasty & will send a shiver right down your spine! I suggest you try using just plain gasloline in the tank & see if it knocks then. If not, you know to cut back on your diesel concentration!

Rich, what does the knock sound like? Is it heavy, thunky, rattley, etc. It could be as simple as crank end play too large. To check main bearing play, lift or jack up flywheel & pully (with cover off) look for excessive movement, if it looks bad use a dial indicator to check. Does it do it when you accelerate engine with no load on it? If it only does it under load you won't be able to short out spark plugs to check rod bearings for knock. From what you have put in your post it kind of sounds like excessive crank end play or worn cam to crank gears, or loose pistons, if its a little lighter could be wrist pins loose. usually rod & mains will knock at higher speeds also.

The knock is a heavy thunk sound. I did change out the rod bearings. The rod bearings I took out were marked std and I put new std back in with no chage in the sound. The thrust bushings on the crank did come apart and I replaced both thrust bushings which meant I had to reset the main bearing play. I beleive I will reset the main bearing play and see what affect that will have. Thankyou for the advice

Rich, have you had a local John Deere expert listen to it? Try a local tractor club they will be quite helpful. Maybe you are looking for a noise that is somewhat normal. Most J.D.'s will have a slight heavy sounding thunk at or close to stall under heavy load, especially if they have aluminum pistons. How much wear is in the cyl. bore? If the pistons have been in there for a lot of hours & there is bore wear they will get noisy at heavy loads. Because of the rod angles after TDC the pistons will lift up off the bottom of the bore at high loads.

I had a knock in my B and all it was, was a loss flywheel. I had it off several times, and didn't think of it until I once used it to turn the engine to check the bearings and then I saw that it had some play. Not much, but enough. Tighten it up, no more knock
