I have a 1020 that is back in the shop for the third time with the same problem. It keeps blowing the power steering pump seals. It will run alright for awhile, but shortly after engaging the PTO the seal blows and I have hydraulic fluid mixed with the engine oil. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I too own a 1020 diesel which experienced pwr steering pump blowing seals... 3 times was a charm for me. After replacing parts not needed and pulling out head hairs, I finally realized that the seal needed to be held in place. I simply dimpled or peened around the seal's enclosure with a punch to tighten it up. It has not leaked since. I associated the blowing of seals with catching the front tires in a furrow or ditch and then having to "work" the power steering to come out...though this may be incorrect analysis also... in any case the peening seemed to solve the problem now going on 3 years or so.

Hope this helps!

Tom

I talked to my repair guy about that same thing the other day. I was worried that perhaps there was a valve or journal that was clogged or for whatever reason, causing a increase in internal pump pressure to cause the seal to blow.

Thanks for your input.

Joe
