My 830 power steering is locking up turning to the right, but if I bump it to the left and then to the right most times it will continue turning, it it especially scary when in road gear. it seems to me the steering valve is hanging up am I correct? It is also sluggish to steer in either direction at times, not hanging up, just slow and hard. It has plenty of oil in it. Any help would be appreciated. I just had it apart to change the o-ring in the steering mast. I worked fine for a lilttle while then this started.

There a quite few things it could be, but a worn step in the actuator cam face, along with flats worn on the follower dowel pins in the actuator valve is the most likely, IMHO, problem for a "hanging up" P/S system. Also the poppet in the actuator valve can get wire burrs formed that need to be removed, but those little dowel pins wear flats and that can inhibit smooth operation.

I wrote quite a lot about this some time ago. Maybe try a search on "power steering" and maybe "frank".

Thanks for yalls help. I really hate having to tear it down again, but a few more dollars should have it steering like new. I read in one of the other responses that Frank wrote, someone bled the air out of the system, but I do not think I will be that lucky. I did change the hose going to the pump an that could have trapped some air, but I am pretty sur eit has worked its way out by now. I also took the rest of the advice and ordered the power steering service manual.

Thanks a million Nick

Seems like all of our powersteering experts stepped out for the day. I'm no powersteering expert, so I cant help you out trouble shooting your problem. Sounds like a sticky valve? I know you can get your tractor to turn easier both ways by turning in the flow control valve. If you go too far it will cause the wheels to flutter. I'm afraid you are going to have to fix the yanking to the one side first though.

Deere does still offer the service manual for two cylinder power steering. You can get it from you local dealer as SM2050. The manual is complete and will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about your powersteering.
