I know this is difficult with not listening to it. A little history, tractor has not been used more than a hour the last couple years, this year we are farming our little 30 acres with it. I checked all fluids, changed engine oil and filter and disked up about 7 acres. Has a noise after it warms 10 minutes, sounds like a gear mesh type noise, can hear alot more when going down hill with the slight decrease in load. I checked closely, noticed fan has backlash of about a inch at fan blade, can hear the noise slope in the govenor assembly. Do you guys think this sounds right. I plan on checking flywheel just to make sure. What should I expect if its in the govenor fan drive assembly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Joe Hartman

It might help to know some of these things. Do you hear the noise while the tranny is in nuetral? Clutch engaged in neutral or disengaged make any difference. Do you hear the noise just when you are pulling something? Have you ruled out the hydraulic pump and Pto driveline by disengaging them? When you hear less noise going downhill, do you mean the engine is holding you back, engine braking so to speak? Or do you mean you are in the field still pulling something, just going downhill? 1 inch play in the fan I think is fairly normal. When you changed oil did you rip the filter open and inspect for metal filings?

Thanks for the reply. The noise is apparent regardless of clutch enagement, and is present both at idle and when in the field with load (13' disk) in third gear or forth dosn't matter. I guess I didn't consider the hydraulic pump and pto since the noise sounds like its in the area of starter engagment and govenor. I can put my hand on the govenor case and feel the vibration when the meshing gets more pronounced. When going down hill still with load, seems to be easier to hear. When I changed oil, no I did not open filter, but will do so. Back to the hydraulic pump. I am unable to locate the lever the service manual (I&T) shows. I have looked everywhere. I understood it is near the timing gear drain plug. But don't know. I hope to have a neighbor that is more familiar with 730's to come and take a listen. I will also disenguage the pto and see what happens. Joe
