I finished a total rebuild on a jd 50 not long ago, and can't get the transmission to stay in 3rd, 5th and 6th gear.
Sometimes will run fine, as long as no load is applied.
The shifter remains and feels like the yoke is still engaged properly, but will not re-engage until shifter is moved out of gear and back in. Sometimes, even that will not remedy, unless shifter is moved to right side of quadrant and then back to left side.
I'm totally puzzled.

When you shift from the low side to the high side you slide the u/o drive gears. On a shifting fork and rod that locks there is a slot cut in the rod that a tab mounted in the fork falls into when the gear shifter leaves that fork. The only way that fork can move is for the gearshift to move that tab out of the rod so it can slide.

I can assure you that you've got a deep problem, have rebuilt about a dozen of these, the problems are generally too numerous to simply explain. Do a transmission rebuild and add locking shifters.

The early 50s didn't have a locking over/underdrive like the 520 had. Even though bearings and gears may look good it seems there is enough wear in everything to let the over/underdrive gear walk out under load. If the gears and bearings are good sometimes you can help it by making sure the shifting pawl is not wore and the notch in the shaft isn't wore also renewing or uping the spring pressure a little on the pawl will sometimes help. You can swap in a locking o/u shifter from 520/530 and that would eliminate the problem for sure.

Did the total rebuild include the transmission?
If it did, maybe something got put together wrong.

That was my first thought, but there is very little that can be reversed...
I built a strap iron shifter lever holder so I sould see inside while I actually shifted, but couldn't find anything that looked or acted suspicious...
