I have a 51 A that has always ran ok, I've used it the last couple years raking hay and running auger and elevator but I left it sit all last winter and now I cant get it to run. I have installed a new coil plugs and wires and I have good spark. I have rebuilt the carburetor and recleaned it and checked the float and needle and seat, I know it gets gas to the carburetor because when i open the drain on the bowl gas runs out. It cranks and cranks and doesnt make so much as a putt. If I spray either into the cylinders and reinstall the plugs it fires right up and runs fine until the either runs out. Anyone have any ideas? Im thinking somehow the intake valves got stuck shut?

I was thinking about the valves stuck shut thing. If this was the case, the lopes on the cam would be damaged along with the push rods and rockers.

remove the hose going to the carb from the air cleaner and see if that helps. it could be full on junk. did you have a cover over the exhaust at least. did you check your oil to see if its got water in it? if it will run on ether its got to be a fuel problem. just because you've got gas running out of carb doesn't mean it is getting enough to make or keep it running. you may have trash in the tank that is stopping the hole up going to the filter. good luck.

Exact same thing happened to me..even though I was pulling the choke lever, the choke butterfly was not closing. There is a spring that actually closes the choke, and if the choke shaft binds or is stuck, it won't close! I had to spray mine with carb cleaner and tap on it abit to free it up.

Most likely, you have a fuel flow problem. Try turning off the fuel at the tank, drain the carburetor, leave the petcock open, turn the fuel back on and see what kind of flow you get. Also, check the needle valves on the carburetor to see if they are open properly. Start with the load needle open about 1.5 turns and the idle nedle open about 1.5 to 2.0 turns. Most likely, the intake valves can not get stuck shut.

I agree with the fuel flow problem. If it runs on ether, it probably is getting air, though you can certainly rule that out quickly by removing the entry elbow and letting it breath. Check the fuel flow from the drain cock on the bowl, then back up towards the tank, checking the screen in the side bowl compartment where the float needle sits. Look for a pencil sized stream flowing for at least 30 seconds to a full minute so you know it isn't just draining a line filled by a dribbling rate.

I once had a large bird feather standing straight up in the tank output port, and depending which way it tilted, it would cut off virtually all the flow. Look for trash in a major way on the tank side before automatically tearing into the craburator passages. Simple things first.
