My cab burned on my 4240. I would like to see if there is any way to operate the tractor without having to replace the cab or what would be the cheapest way to find a salvage cab. thanks

K.B.-826 if you will scan the page in the JD tech manual that states or shows a picture of what you're stating and post it here I will throw in the towel and admit I'm wrong!!!! Over 20 yrs working at a JD dealer make me think I'm correct. Have a nice day,Tx Jim

K.B.-826 if you're splitting tractor to R&R clutch you are correct the diff,SGB,steering/dash and clutch housing stay intact. But if one removes the SGB the steering, dash and clutch housing stay with tractor according to JD tech manual I used 25+ years ago. Maybe JD altered the tech manual since then but I seriosly doubt it. Tx Jim

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one Jim.

K.B-826,your info about purchasing SBB with steering column and dash is incorrect. On all the JD tractors that I removed SGB the steering column, dash and clutch/brake pedals remained with tractor! Tx Jim

I've done two myself, a 4630 and 4755, and I've seen many SGB's come off of 30-60 series. Steering column/dash assembly came off with cab on every single one, no matter who was working on it, and that is the way the tech manual shows. I've heard it's possible to leave the steering column with the tractor, but I just don't see how it saves time. Only situation where that may save time is if you're splitting between clutch housing and trans housing on a quad-range, but then again why not just support rear of cab and roll the trans out from under with floor jack- I've seen it done.

I agree, find one in a salvage yard off of a tractor with a blown engine or other mechanical problem. Try to get one off of another 4240 with the same transmission as you have, that will make for an easy swap. Tell them you want one as complete as possible with the steering column, dash, and all the wiring instead of trying to salvage parts from your burned one. It's pretty simple to remove the cab- remove battery boxes, unhook the wiring, disconnect heater hoses and A/C lines, disconnect steering and brake lines, disconnect shift, SCV, and hitch control linkages, throttle cable, PTO control and clutch pedal rods, tach cable and whatever else I'm forgetting, unbolt the cab mounts and the whole thing lifts off, seat, floor, steering column and all. Swap the salvage yard cab on and repair any other fire damage and you're back in good shape.

Mark Heitman should have one and is located in WC WI. He is very good to deal with. 715-673-4829. I have bought a few things there and gotten good quality at a good price.
