If the tractor is charging, will the needle on the gauge go to the - side or the + side? Common sense would tell me that it should go to the + side, but it goes to the - side when it is charging.

yeah, i think i need to swap the wires at the gauge, and that should solve the problem. Thank you to you guys for helping me out!

An ammeter simply shows which direction current is flowing. What ever way the needle is moving - that is the direction of the current flow. The plus and minus marks mean nothing - unless you've hooked the wires on the correct posts.

It should read (+) when charging.

Swapping ALL the wires between the two posts will make it read the opposite way.

What are ou working with.. a tractor that was originally (+) ground that has been swapped to (-) ground?

i dont know if it was originally a + ground tractor, but right now it is a - ground tractor. it is a '51 A. so swapping the wires should make it go the other way? if you turn the lights on without the tractor running, the gauge goes to the + side, so that kinda made me wonder if something was backwards with the gauge.

That is the other test that shows the polarity of the gauge is indeed backwards. Either change the battery (and flash the generator) or change the leads on the ammeter.

If you are satisfied with the battery ground polarity as it is, simply swap the wires at the ammeter.
