I had the head and the injectors re-worked. The injectors were 800 lbs pressure low-so they have been replaced with refurbished injectors. The tractors fires right up but smokes. 1600-1700 rpm the engine is struggling and really smokes bad. The return line isn't plugged and the injector pump wasn't removed-so it can't be a time issue. What else can cause this??

Let me guess...The smoke is grey or white. The motor doesn't run perfectly smooth when it smokes. After the engine warms up, the problem goes away?

Kind of a blueish gray color. The radiator has been boiled & flushed, new belt, thermo, water pump, & head bolts with washers. Head ground 0.004" with valve job also. Injector pump never removed, just injectors. Once warm, it still struggles to get to 1600-1800 rpm and smokes like a freight train, but idles pretty well. Smokes while idling-really smokes when increasing RPMs. I think its an injector problem even though they are supposed to be reman. Am I close on my thinking? Thanks for all your responses so far!

I have never had much faith in "rebuilt" injectors. I ALWAYS test injectors before putting them in for anyone and most all of the rebuilt ones were no better than the ones removed. Even brand new injectors can be defective as I have seen them. Any time you install injectors always check them for pattern and pressure. The last time I checked "rebuilt" injectors were only about $20 each less than a brand new one. Not worth it. Mike

I hope that gets it.

Sure is disappointing to buy new or reman parts and get junk. Seems to happen more and more.

I don't know.

Make sure there is some fuel pressure to the injection pump when the engine is running.

{I was thinking maybe the valves were seated too deeply, but this type of smoke goes away when the engine is warmed up.-- This doesn't sound like the problem now.}

Uh oh. Valve job = lost compression. New seats & new valves only. DO NOT grind the old valves and seats then look for improvement.

do you have any idea what would make the power lift on a 2640 go all the way to the top and stay there all the time as long as the motor is running

Put those injectors on a test stand and check the spray pattern & popping pressure. Don't take them to the same shop or tell the shop where they came from.
Sounds like they were incorrectly rebuilt or they were just cores that were never rebuilt.
New head bolts are required as used fasteners will not give a reliable re-torque. Particularly if you suspected seepage prior.
I have to suspect the decision to change a head gasket when the engine was running fine and was only running warm..... ..... .....
Odds are the rad is plugged on the outside with oily dirt. Plugged on the inside with scale because somebody added tap water rather than distilled water. The fan belt/pulleys are glazed/worn. Or the stat is getting balky being about 25 years old. The temp gauge could be out of calibration with years of vibration and exposure to weather.
As for an engine being too hot? With a pressurized cooling system with 50/50 mix. Unless you tractor is a supercharged or turboed pulling tractor running on gasoline. 195-210F is the ideal operating temp for a hard working engine. An engine at part load putting around, doing loader work etc is better off running 210-220F

Kind of blue, but smells of a rich diesel smell. I removed the hose from the intake to eliminate the filtration system-so it's getting a straight shot of air.

I am thinking like the others at the other post at TT that maybe your "reman" injectors are no good ?
