I've got a 1952 JD 40 that has a TSX 688 carburetor.
This looks to be a carb for a 420. I've not been able to get it to run to my satisfaction. Do I need to change the carb? What carb is recommended?
Thanks!

I would suspect if its a 420 carb on a 40 its getting to much fuel. Remember the 40 was equal to the 320, a 420 is bigger. If its running rich I would say the carb is jetted to high for your tractor.

So what is the difference between the two? Do I need to change?

I would really tend to doubt the different carb. numbers are really that much different. As long as they look similar and have similar size of openings and have adjustable load and idle circuits it should run. The one you have may be plugged up somewhere ? but no 2 are really going to perform identical due to wear and even could have been drilled a little different from new.

And then there is always the chance the tractor has another problem but makeing you think it has a carb. problem when it doesn't. This is where having another tractor around to swap parts off of can be a big help.
