i have a jd 3130 from the mid 1970's . not sure of the serial number, would have to look for it.
My service manual shows a fuse box on the lower left side below the steer wheel.
my tractor has no such thing anywhere. I have taken the side panels off to see the under dash/monitor... but still see no fuses anywhere.

my problem is starting have replaced, both batteries, alternator, both ground cables, as well as positive cable from both batteries to the starter. i must charge the batteries up nightly or the next day the tractor will not start.
i am stumped why i am not getting charge to the batteries. i thought maybe some fuse was blown since none of the indicator lights work.
Tractor is stored nearly always in a shed out of the elements.
the tractor is also cabless. anyone have any idea what i can try next.
tractor run just fine "once you get it started".

Stumped

Pull the cable from the battery's - chassis return. Place an amp meter between the cable end and chassis. Odds are there is a drain when the engine is shut off and the switches shut off. What is the charging voltage measured across the batteries when running at fast idle and lights on? I have seen dual battery 12V system where the batterys fight & drain each other.

None of the 3130's that I have worked on or owned had the fuse box or "bilux" lighting system as it was called on the 2120 etc. When you do get it to start will it do so with the key? Are all the dash lights dead? From memory there are only 1 or 2 circuit breakers under the dash... check for power across them. If the alt.lamp bulb is burnt out charging system will not work. What make of alternator is on this tractor? Original equipment was a Bosch with external regulator mounted on firewall at right side close to fuel filter. Not sure if any of this helps as I seem to have more questions than answers right now. More info please.

that can indeed be the problem as only 1 of the dash board lights seems to be working. will check this tomorrow. yes i can start it with the key, the alternator is the Bosch "all $399.99 CA of it"

i had taken the side panels off in the spring and found a small box "like a regulator would be" took it to a Deere dealer . the parts guys had no idea what it was said it must be a flasher or such replay so i put the old thing back on.

since i have the side panels off and was gonna take some pictures of the dash to help find the fuse box, i can get to that "possible" regulator again and check for any numbers, maybe take a picture of it to help identify it also.

thanks

The 3130 originally did have a fuse box on the dash. Possibly a previous owner has done some "creative wiring",which is going to make a diagnosis over the internet a hit or miss proposition at best.. If the batteries are going dead overnight you could have a bad diode in the alternator,a bad voltage regulator,a dead short to ground, or something is not wired up correctly.Until you get it sorted out, charge the batteries with the ground cable unhooked, this will keep the batteries from going dead while sitting, and possibly keep the tractor from burning the shed down if it does have a short.

I don't know for sure but I have a 4020 and right after I bought it I had the same problem. Bought two new batteries and found out that both the starter and alt were shorted and draining the one battery. I had both of them rebuilt and haven't had any problems since.

Just for what it is worth. May want to have the starter checked for a short.
