Hello. I have a 1965 John Deere 1010 that the generator has gone bad on, and they are so expensive to buy, I've decided to go to a delco remy alternator. Problem is, the engine on the Deere turns counterclockwise and the alternator turns clockwise. I'm confused. What am I doing wrong/what should I be doing? Any and all help appreciated. I have a 3 wire and a 1 wire alternator..is one better than the other? Can anyone help me get this hooked up? Thanks.

If it were mine, I would fix the generator.

Free advice is worth what it costs ya!

You're DARNED RIGHT, YOU'RE confused!

Your 1010 turns CW, like 99.9% of everything else out there.

How the "Harold H. Henderson" did you get the idea it turns backward from anything else????

Besides, a Delco alternator doesn't give a "whiz" WHICH way it turns, outside of the fact the pulley/nut will unscrew and fall off if turned backwards, unless Loctite is used.

Well Bob, all I know is that if your sitting in the seat and you start this 1010 the belt is turning counterclockwise. So, thats how I got the Harold H. Henderson idea. I do appreciate all the ones who have tried to help. Thanks.

While Bob is right of course, you still have some precedence to claim your view could have been just as valid. Concerning all vehicles, the right side is taken to be on the right as when the driver drives it and the left of course being on his left. And NEVER the twain should be confused - no exceptions allowed.

It's ONLY when discussing the direction of engine rotation that "we" get down from the contraption, change our perspective totally and view the engine head on from the crankshaft pulley to declare that most all engines turn clockwise. The corvair being the only exception that comes to my mind at the moment.

The pulley fan will not cool as well running backwards. A good automotive or marine shop ought to have reversed rotation fans.

And that same shop will have or can get a small diameter and wide pulley so the alternator will spin fast enough.

see this article. It tells you how to wire up the 3 wire job. If you decide on the 1 wire setup, make sure that the engine will turn it fast enought to excite the fields and it start charging. On my 8N, I basically have to run it wide open for a sec to get it to charge. If your tractor was 12v to begin with, ignore the coil part of the drawing. If it is 6V, pay close attention to that part.

That Alt. won't matter which way you turn it. That one wire maybe better ? less chance of wiring it up wrong.

3 wire units are better... really only 2 wires to worry about as the #2 wire hits the charge stud. thus you still have the charge wire as witht he 1-wire unit.. that only leaves 1 wire.. the #1 wire which can be run thru a 194 marker lamp to the switched side of the ignition switch...

not real hard to wire up at all..

I learned long ago when working at the rebuild shop that if most of the people have more than 1 wire to hook up they will get it wrong.

There's always gonna be idiots.. can't do much about that. However.. the 3 wire units tend to charge at lower rpms.. and how much harder really is it to hookup 2 wires vd 1 wire?

You would be surprized how hard it must be ? I was. Just go to work at a starter, alt., gen. repair shop for awhile.

Not to mention the guys that think his 9N Ford has a mag. on it !

i've seen a few mags on N's and industrial engines.. net suckers.. but i much prefer battery ignition for ease of maintenance.

As for the alternator issue.. It's one thing to work in a shop and push the 1 wire units to cut down on returns/damage, and phone support... it's quite another to post here, on a forum where the spread of 'educational' ideas can be more easilly spread.. etc. IE.. those that know, should try to spread 'better' info.. not just the 'easy' info.. etc. I've seen many a 1-wire alternator cause more problems than it solves... namely in situations where enough rpms can not be developed to spin the alt fast enough to excite. I've helped plent of people on engines that max out at 1000 rpm.. etc that have had problems with 1 wire jobs. yet the 18 year old kid at the aprts counter told them that was what they needed...
