Appreciate the answers I have received concerning problems with JD 730 Diesel fuel problem. Will try bleeding the fuel system longer. However, since the outlet of the pump does not squirt out fuel when the tractor is turned over, we suspect problems with the pump or the mechanism that causes the pump to turn. Am I correct in assuming that if the pump was operating correctly, that fuel should shoot out of the pump outlet at a significant pressure? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure if you take off the fuel line that goes to the filters and crank the motor you should see fuel being pumped out. On a 730 the fuel supply is a loop back to the transfer pump so it self bleeds unlike a 70 or 720.

Are you asking about the transfer pump up on the end of the governor ? Or the injection pumps ? Either one should squirt out fuel ? Did you set the adjustment of the transfer pump pressure. Did you find the fuel bleed screw on the LH side of the block ?

With the throttle position set at it's most forward position you should be seeing some fuel.

Are you getting fuel to your filters? Are you getting fuel from you filters to the pumps under the cover on the engine (underneath the fuel tank)? Have you checked these lines for flow?

The high pressure pumps dont turn. They are plunged by a third set of lobes on the cam shaft. There is a set of pushrods just for the pumps.

Is the camshaft spinning? Are your tappets opening and closing? If so I bet your pumps are moving. I think it unlikley that you would'nt have at least one side of your pump be operable (one cylinder should fire). I believe you need to find a blockage in a line somewhere. A little investigation with a pressure guage will tell you something. You may want to start cracking lines to figure out how far the fuel is actually getting.

Do you have a manual for this tractor? If not you might want to invest in one if you plan to keep this old 730 around. They are more help than you know.
