Here recently I saw an unusual John Deere tractor.
It was a mid 50's model 40 and had a GM Detroit Diesel 2 71 2 stroke engine for power. Ive been searching for more info on these with no luck. I only know of one other JD tractor with GM Detroit power in it and it was a large articulating tractor. Anyone out there heard of one of these?

How ceratain are you that it is a 40? Sounds like a 435 with 2-53 GM. Maybe someone put 40 decals on it for fun, but I can't imagine why. Look at the position of the steering wheel, if it is slanted (slant steer) then it is a 435. If it is straight up and down then it is a 40 that was modified. The serial # should tell you if it is a 40 or 435. It could have been play toy for someone if its a 40. I once saw a Farmall M with a "screamer" in it (I think a straight 3) and was it wild! Detroit motors sure do turn heads!

There is a boy around here with a super M farmall with a 4-71 detriot turning about 3000rpms and he is on the oxygen bottle. He spins cut 30-32's in road gear with no problem.

Is this guy anywhere near East Central Illinois? This M I saw was at Penfield Illinois this past summer and it sure drew a crowd at the dyno. I have never heard of the 4-71, but am no Jimmy expert. I wonder what this motor was commonly used for? I think the engine that Oliver used in the Super 99 was 3 cylinders so I thought maybe someone put that in the M. It doesnt matter what they are in, they were and still are incredible engines. We have a 6-71 in a grain truck that is probably 25 years old and I think GM made that engine back in the 30'S or early 40's. It still screams everytime and NEVER causes any problems

The 99 oliver had the 3-71 detriot which is the 3 cilinder 71 cubic inch per cilinder motor. Some of the later olivers and the later cockshutts had the bigger 4-71. SUPPOSEDLY, there was a kit for the super M back in the 50's where you could put a bigger moter in your tractor for more horsepower. Much like the 8n ford Flat head V8. You didnt see what that detriot dynoed did you? This boy is proably around 350 or so. I forgot to tell you, there is a UC allis here with a 6-71 in it. But the moter is worn out and the farmall puts on a better show.

I dont know what the M dynoed at. I'm just curious as to where 'here' is. Are you in the midwest? There arent many hybrid tractors around here. Pretty much the most "rebellious" tractors in these parts are the ones with chrome straight pipes or oversized tires.

Drpsychosis, I've checked my book, and see no GM diesel 40's. There is all-fuel, and some fairly rare things, but no diesel. Will check with a friend. He has a 40V, which is itself fairly rare, but he may know more. There was a 435 with GM 2-53 diesel (59-60), but no sign of a 2-71 so far. Anyone else ?

I stand corrected on the displacement.

Detroit 2 stokes were made in 3 displacemnet series of x-53, x-71 and x-92. The x would refer to the number of cylinders (with a v added for v configured engines) and the 53, 71 or 92 refering to the displacement per cylinder in cubic inches.

I knew it was a 2-53 but said -71 in error and didnt catch it before posting.

Has anyone seen anything about these in any of the tractor books on the market?

Hi - I understand the 53-71, and now 92 terminology, but there is nothing in my fairly comprehensive collection of books. Is this identical to the usual 40's, or is it a _40, such as for example 440, 3440, etc? Will look further, but maybe this is some kind of a modified hybrid, nicely done. If you have a photo, can you post it or e-mail it to me ?

Well I'm probably mistaken on the model number of 40. I'm in no way a JD expert but thats what it looked like. I'm now being told it had to have been a 435.

I saw this one restored and on display at the state fair. I wish I'd had a camera to be able to send a photo. I talked to a friend of the owner and he exlpained they were manufactured by JD in a very limited run.
