730 Diesel Fuel Pump

We have had trouble with our JD 730 Diesel fuel system all summer. Have cleaned out tank, clean fuel sediment bulb, replaced fuel fileters, and finally had the fuel pump rebuilt. The tractor still will not start. At this time, even with the rebuilt fuel pump, it appears this pump is not operating properly. It does not pump out fuel when the engine is cranked with the battery. Have heard this pump needs to be primed by pressurizing the tank. Also, have heard that the bypass valve can be replace with a screw to help pump. Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Belt it to another two cylinder and roll the 730 over without compression and the fuel on. Can the engine oil afterwards as it may get diluted with raw diesel. How much pressure is the primary pump making? Are the cam lobes ok? If the injection pump rollers are not lined up to run centered on the lobes. The lobes can get worn down to nubs.

Alot of the later tractors also have a bleed screw on the LH side of the block. It is in the end of another piece that screws in there.

I have always had these bleed easy ? even if the injectors and pumps were removed and new injection lines installed. I don't think I ever had to bleed one at the injectors ? I have had to bleed alot of later model stuff at the injectors though.

MSB is right.... it is a nuisance sometimes. On the electric start tractors I've just had my dad drag me around until it starts (only after bleeding for a while) It's a little easier on a pony start tractor. The pony does not overheat and get tired like your starter and batteries on the E.S. Just be patient and bleed a little more. Of course while you are cranking put the rack at the max (full throttle). You can ease the load on the starter by cranking decompressed only compressing every once in a while to check for fuel.

Outside of the bleeding problems these are pretty dang tough and very efficient!

Wishing you the best of luck!!

Probably just needs bled and they can be a total bear to bleed. Remove the plugs on the fuel filters and set a bucket under them and wait and wait and wait. Sooner or later a few bubbles will appear.Do the right side one first. If the pump had a return check valve on top of the pump cover, remove the top part and wait and wait ands wait.

I have seen them run without the fuel pump even hooked up. In fact I have one here right now that came that way. It starts on the first spin- no problem. You might try opening the bleed plugs and putting a little air pressure in the tank to force the fuel and air bubbles out of the lines. I have done that and it works pretty good.
