Why is a 4020 with a side console so much more expensive than one without. I understand it is more convenient but I've been looking at 4020's for awhile and it seems as though the ones with the side consoles are $2,000 - $3,000 more than those without. That seems like an expensive option, is there something I'm missing.

I just bought a 66 4020 and love it! It has a cab and definately would not work with a console. I don't know how much some of these people know about the 4020, but since I work for John Deere (not a dealership), I was able to look up some info on the tractor before I bought mine. All 404 engines fro 4020's were rated the same, regardless of year. Parts interchange very well between years, and the tractor remained very close to the same from 64-72. The 4000 tractor was kind of a hybrid between the 3020 and 4020. It used the same 6 cylinder gas & diesels available with the 4020, but the lighter weight transmission of the 3020. It also was more of a "no frills" tractor, without factory cabs, duals, etc. But as stated, it did come with a powershift transmission as an option. Wheel and tire options were the same as the 4020, but I don't believe a high crop version was ever made. Also, they did not come with battery boxes, as stated. I believe they were not as big of hit as the 4020, due to the lighter transmission, and customers either chose a 3020 or 4020, depending upon their needs. If looking to buy a tractor, any year would be ok. Even a 4010 was a good tractor, although the engine was the same design, just 380 cubic inches instead of 404.

I do stand corrected on the options that the 4000 had available especially the Powershift. I must of been thinking of the 4320 or 4030 which never was offered with a Powershift. As far as the 4000 having a 3020 transmission I think you better do your homework a little more. I have seen this misrepresentation of the 4000 in old marketing information, but that does not make it correct. The reason they represented it that way I don't know. Deere may not of wanted the genral public to know just how inexpensive a 4020 could really be built so they would steer the strong 4020 Deere buyer to buy the higher priced 4020. To confirm what I am saying look at the parts books for these tractors and compare. A parts book don't lie. Find one single Transmission casting, gear or transmission shaft in the 4000 that was used on a 3020. You will find these parts in a late 4020 parts book the same. The only common Parts that I know that might be the same as a 3020 are the three point arms. The three point was a lighter version on the 4000 like the 3020 and may have been the same. Some engine parts between early and late 4020's will interchange but by no means not all parts will, again look at the parts books and see the difference in sleeves and piston sets that won't interchange, blocks, heads, and the list goes on. Some parts will sub up but allot of them won't. Just some known facts that should be cleared up. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you for the correct additonal information that "all" you folks have listed, I have learned somthing Too!! Dave

Dave,
I can't find a Nebraska test for the 4000 tractor with a powershift transmission. They only list the synchro range in the book I have. Were the 4000's ever tested at Nebraska with the powershift?

Shorty, My findings are the same as yours. To be honest with you I have never seen a 4000 Powershift. I have worked on 4000 gas models and have seen 4000 Low profile tractors. I did not know that they were offered in a Powershift until the posting below had mentioned it. Maybe he can dig up some more information on them and better yet some numbers. It sure would be ineresting to know more about this. A guy learns somthing everyday!!

You certainly do learn something at these forums! I am not an expert nor do I claim to be. This past summer at the I&I tractor show in Penfield Ill. Deere was the featured company. There were a few 4000 tractors but I didnt pay much attention because I didnt really understand what their purpose was. It looked exactly like a 4010 or 4020. I know there are differences but cant say what they are. Now to my point..... ...Here is my little bit of info that I know to be fact: The 4000 was available in a powershift and in the gas version only 9 were built. There was one at Penfield and it was in the restoration process but was on display. It is owned by a guy in Tuscola Ill. and I cant for the life of me remember his name. It doesnt matter but it will be perfect when it is done. He has several MINT condition tractors and takes no shortcuts in restoring them. So now we all have learned one more thing today!

Dave,
Isn't it great the way we can learn more about these tractors? I really enjoy reading all of the posts. There are really a lot of guys on here that know a whole lot about John Deere tractors. I thought Deere and company ran ever model and variation of every model through the Nebraska test. I worked for the local dealership for 15 years selling new equipment, and I only saw one model 4000 tractor during that time.

Re: 4020 Side Console in reply to Phil, 01-25-2000 18:43:18
Phil, The console 4020's came out in 1969 and ended in 1972. The 69 and newer model's were an entirely different tractor than the 68 and older model's. Yes they did have a 404 cubic inch engine and were both available with the two different transmission options (Powershift and Syncrorange). But the engines were a different design and later changed again I think in 1971. The transmission cases and clutch housing were different. The PTO clutch was hydraulic accuated verses mechanical on the Syncroranges. The instrument, dash assembly and sheet metal is all different. The electrical systems went to a 12 volt system with a alternator for the charging circuit. The hydraulics were much more refined, different Rockshaft assembly and the big one was the one piece SCV's (Selective Control Valve). This is just some of the obvious things that were changed they are many more if you want to get more technical Fuel System, Air Filters, Intake Manifold, Exhaust System, Etc.. In my opinion they should have changed the model number and it would have saved allot of confusion. So what it boils down to is you get what you pay for. There is a difference!! Another big misconception was the 4000 tractor. People will try to tell that it was a 3020 with a 4020 engine, NOT TRUE!! the 4000 was built in the same era as the console 4020's and was built to be more competitive with other brands of tractors of the same size. The 4000 was the exact same tractor as the late model 4020's with these exceptions. It was never offered or built with a Powershift Transmission. No battery boxes, it had open trays. No sheetmetal around the Rockshaft housing and SCV's. From the outside axle bearing out they downsized the axle shaft diameter. Lighter cast wheel centers. And No synchronized reverse. The rest of the tractor was the same as the late model 4020. Engine, Transmission, Rearend, Hydraulics, Electrical System and Sheetmetal all the same. The best part about the 4020's was its Diesel engines, Hydraulic systems and there transmissions. The poorest parts were Gas engines, Water pumps and Traction and PTO clutches. I formed these opinions working on these tractors at John Deere dealerships for over twenty years so take it for what it is worth. Hope you find this information interesting. Dave

According to the serial numbers there were 4000 powershifts , at least in the gas version, and they were EXTREMELY RARE. As a matter of fact, and I cant prove it without making some phone calls, there were only 9 gas powershifts made., and one of them is in Tuscola Illinois.

Dave,John Deere DID offer the 4000 with a powershift transmission. There was 156 made in 1971 and 247 made in 1972 on the Diesel models. What would would be great to find is a gas 4000 with powershift cause there was only 5 made in 1971 and 4 made in 1972. There was also 25 Low-Profile Diesel powershifts made. My 4000 Diesel came from the factory in 1971 with powershift, differential lock , 38 inch heavy cast wheels and dual SCV's.

The side console was standard in the third edition of the 4020, after sn 201,000. The side console links to the three point and the remotes with rods instead of rust prone bourdon cables. At the same time the engine is a bit bigger, the remotes are a more modern style with the valve at the remote (and with variable flow rate control at the connector) instead of on the firewall. Likely there are numerous other changes at that sn. I've not yet compared the parts books for the late version to see what else changed.

For several thousand less, I'm quite happy with my '68 vintage 4020. I'm not sure there's that much difference in performance or lifetime to account for the added price. I think its more of prized by some potential buyers to push the price up.

besides being much more comfortable to use than the dash mounted controls.the age of the tractor must have something to do with it, the side console didnt come out till {69} i think

Was side console an option? Brother in law has a '71? that still has everything dash mounted. If it was not an option, then that would leave only a year or two that the side console model was made wouldn't it?

John Deere started the side console in 1969 ,the side console was standared Equip. The engine is the same 404 cu.in. but had a bit more hp.rating . The Hydraulics were better . The 69-70 models had a mickey mouse inj pump that leaked and were short lived for the most part. Your brother -in- laws tractor is not a 71 , best look at the serial no. Some dealers sold older tractors and used the year sold as the year of the tractor.
