I own a 1954 JD 60 when I bought the tractor it started fine after a while the starter went bad so I had it rebuilt. now the starter drive would grind on the flywheel and not fully engage the flywheel. the flywheel was badly worn so I replaced the flywheel. now the starter drive would grind on the flywheel occasionly. the starter drive is the right one and the flywheel is the same part number as the old one and the flywheel has no end play and the linkage that connects the starter pedal to the starter is adjusted to the specs the JD service manual calls for. one person told me to grind the end of the flywheel to a angle but im a little skeptical to do such a thing. I am running out of ideas please help thanks in advance. Anthony

A bad Bendix can cause this problem. My 620 starter was grinding. Replaced the Bendix and the problem was gone.

I bought the "right" bendix drive some three times in quick succession before I finally came across the one that actually works perfectly for me now. Here's hoping one time does it for you...

Close inspection won't show any clues as to why the bad ones slip and grind like they do, operate them manually and they hold just fine - use them with the starter and it sounds like jumping into a box of broken glass or worse.

i agree with machinery-man. i had to do my 48 b that way, just because i changed the bendix. just put a short 45 angle on it. i even got to the point where i made me a small crank that i could stick in the end of the flywheel and turn it just a little and it would start. try that first and if that works bevel the ring gear.

forgot to say that if the ring gear is really malled you can remove flywheel, drive the gear off, rotate it some, heat and reinstall....done that several times also....best to bevel while on tractor...I always pulled the plugs and compression was not a problem....pretty simple once you've done it...

I don't have a fix, but here's a get-by if you still want to use your tractor w/o ruining your new ring gear/starter pinion.

Install a HD PB or solenoid, Normally Open switch in the battery circuit to the starter. Now you can engage the pinion with the ring gear, using the starter pedal, w/o energizing the starter. You may have to use a flat screwdriver thru the timing hole in the top of the flywheel cover to inch the ring gear so the pinion will seat. Once seated, hold it there and energize the starter with the PB. When it fires, of course you'll want to release both.

Done it many times...you need to bevel the teeth to make engagement...real common problem...take a small grinder, be cautious but no problem to do...just take your time....
