JD 70 head gasket

The head gasket must have been seepy on my John Deere 70 gasoline tractor. Has had a sweet smell upon start up for sometime. Finally after setting for sometime it filled the cylinder. I took off the head today to find a decent looking metal Victor head gasket. No real antifreeze trails on the gasket like I have found in 3.8 Ford engines. The metal gasket material looked cracked (one side) in one place from the water jacket up too the fire ring. It was a very very small inperfection. When my son broke all of the head bolts loose it seemed that they all weren't as tight as some. My opinion in regards to his struggle. At some places the gasket had a black stained area which could have been seepy areas. Cylinder compression was good. Any experience with this????? ? The Victor gasket looked like it was of very high quality. It had Victor printed right on it. Is it ok to use a Victor gasket again???? I know the torque is 208 foot lbs. Also, start in the center and work outward gradually bringing up the torque. I think I will use some spray on copper-cote metal gasket sealer. I assume I should spray all surfaces lightly and assemble. Any other ideas on the 70 gas head would be appreciated. andy

Now is the time to get the head checked for flatness. It may need to be resurfaced. I would also touch up the valves.

I am no expert on this but from what I have learned it is not recommended to reuse a head gasket.
