730- You should read issue of T-C 7-8 04. There are two field service bulletins. (No.259, Nov 1957; No.260, Dec 1957) It is true about the different quad. The 730 AF STD one of 28 had a quad like this on it. In that article a 8mph fifth gear assembly, had a special fourth and sixth speed gear assembly. When these were used a different quad was needed. Could of been ordered from the factory or field installed upon request. Installing this also changed the ground speeds in first and third and also fifth. The bulletins explained what parts needed to change over and what new ground speeds would be in each gear. Does your quad have a decal in the lower left corner on the top face?? That decal was installed when when this was added. This special gear assembly was used only on 720 and 730. Does the decal have a number of R20069R? Hope this helps. Several have had a change.

I assumed he meant Two-Cylinder magazine which is published 6 times per year. 7-8 04 would be the July-August issue of 2004. I have it right here with a nice picture of an all fuel 730 standard brought back from South Africa on the cover. Here is the web site for Two-Cylinder:

I am quite interested in this because I'm restoring a 730LP that has the optional 5th gear, but does not have the correct gear shift quadrant. I'm looking at the Two-Cyl mag from July-August of 2004 and I don't find the info about field service bulletins that you referencing. Wrong issue maybe? I appreciate learning from you about the decal because I didn't know about that. But what I do know is that there are two special quadrants for tractors with the optional 5th gear. R20068R is for a diesel. R20067R is for gasoline or LP. I sure would like to find R20067R which I suspect is less common. There was an articel in one of the magazines that did a good job of sorting out the whole business about optional gears, but I haven't been able to relocate it. I would appreciate if anyone comes across it that they would let me know.
