All,

just got a 66 4020. though i didnt (still dont) know much about them I"m learning...a little.

this is likely to sound like a stupid question, but with a synchro shift...the transmission and hydraulic oil is the same, right?

How do you change and where is the filter located? Is there any good online reference material for mtce of a 4020? I have a shop manual, but it doesnt cover basic stuff like this.

thanks,

If the drain sticks, hit it with a big hammer. That will smash the seal washer just a hair and loosen the plug right up.

Same oil. Transmission case serves as the reservoir.Dry capacity is 13 gallons , so expect to get at least 12 gallons once you pull the plug.Best to have 3 -5 gallon buckets handy. Drain plug is 1 1/4 " plug under the transmission. Filter is on the left side of the transmision case. The bolt in the filter cover takes a 3/4" wrench. If you are not sure about the service history then I would pull the suction screen. Its a plug right behind the hydraulic filter cover. Could take a 1/2" breaker bar, a large Crescent wrench or a large Allen wrench to remove the plug, depending on what Deere was using at the time. The screen simply pulls out.
