Hello: I am going to look at a 494A planter tomorrow that is suppose to be in very good condition but he does NOT have any plates for Soybeans. Having no experiance finding or buying plates so I'll ask. What do used plates often sell for and how hard to find for this old of a planter? Thanks for any helpful comments agpilot.. Ps I just quit 40 plus years of city life and moved back to a hobby farm. The last time I planted with a JD planter was about 1958. Hows that for having a "2ed" try at farming a few acres again... That's what old equipment is for...

I've got a bunch of JD planter plates, if you know the numbers you need I'll see if I've got them. We can work out a fair price if I have what you need. I don't have a list handy but the planter was used for corn, sweet corn, and edible beans so I probably have something that will work.

Agpilot, you don't necessarily need bean plates to plant beans. Years ago when I sold seed plate planters were still being used. The company I sold for recommended using a medium round corn plate to plant beans. You would drop two beans per cell and set the planter according to population using the corn chart times two. It worked very well. It actually did a better job than using bean plates. Hope this helps. Mike

In Illinois bean plates are cheap if guys can find them. We used the same bean plates for all beans vs. many plates for different seed corn. The bean plates were metal compared to the "new plastic corn plates".

Thanks jp illinois... I forgot to mention I am in SW MN but it's still mostly corn and beans (if it's not cattle grazing ground) The key is "if" a person can find the plates?? That seems to be the common problem with any OLD machine. I was kind of hopeing there might be an implement salvage yard in the mid-west?? Thanks again. agpilot

agpilot,

Get on Ebay and type in planter plates and you'll find all the JD seed plates you are looking for. The plastic ones are just as good as the old iron ones.

Did you spend time in a Pawnee?
