I have a John Deere LA that has about 8 hours on a remanufactured engine. I am using Champion H12 Plugs. There is no obstruction in the air cleaner, and it is filled to the correct level with 30 weight non detergent oil. There are no air leaks in the manifold or carburator. The carburator float level is set correctly. The magneto has been rebuilt and is throwing out a hot blue spark. The carburator has been cleaned and rebuilt. The fuel/air adjustment on the carbujrator seems to have little or no effect on the air/fuel mixture. The engine will run for about an hour. If you try to restart it it will not start until the plugs are cleaned....then it starts again very easily. This same thing happens with new pluga right out of the box. Need help to solve the problem???

take your champion plug and throw them away. go and buy some AC Delco C45L plugs and I bet your problem will be solved. If the tractor runs and doesn't smoke black you shouldn't have a carb problem. when you pull the plugs are they covered with black carbon? let me know if this halps. good luck

Problem with those carbs. is they have a fixed load jet so you can't adjust them. Someone could of put in the wrong jet or bored it out or left it out ? It might not hurt to try to find out what size jet goes in there. Maybe Robert's carb. will have that info.

I overhauled 2 identical carbs. off of model L's for a fellow , but I noticed the jets were different sizes ? So I marked the carbs. and gave the fellow instructions that if this one was lean or the other ran rich to let me know and we could check into different jets. Well I never heard back ?

If all you do with the tractor is drive it around and not do any hard work with it, then it is no surprise that the plugs foul out.

No matter how good your wires and plugs and how tight your engine is, you still have to work it and get it hot to avoid fouling plugs.

RobMD: Thank you for the response to my inquiry. You are absolutely correct about getting hot and working them to avoid plug fouling, however this tractor fouls plugs badly whether working or not.

It may be too much oil in air cleaner causing it to run rich. I just finished a JD H which has a similar problem, when I try to increase the engine speed it coughs and black smoke rolls out. I've reduced the oil level and it has helped, going to lower it a bit more next time before I start it.

Does it smoke black when running, i.e. rich?

Check the float in the carb. Shake it by your ear and see if it has fuel in the float tank(s). This would cause the fuel level to be high and rich and non adjustable on the mixture.

Thank you Rodger in Iowa for your response to my inquiry. I will take the carburator apart and carefully check out the float for leaks, and recheck the float level. Thanks, again, AWB

This may not be of much help, but remember the idle adjustment on that carburetor is an air adjustment rather than fuel, thus turning it in (clockwise) richens the mixture.

To: Bob Collins: I guess I didn't state my problem clearly. Anyhow, you are absolutely right about the idle adjustment regulating only the amount of air not fuel. But at any rate adjusting the idle adjustment doesn't seem to help one way or another. My thihking (Right or Wrong) was that if more air was let in the plugs wouldn't be so apt top foul out?? The whole problem has me stumped for the moment. I appreciate your response to my inquiry.
