Oaktree, If you have a 3020 with a turbo your problems are just starting If its over 70 hp. We had a customer that overhauled his eng. every spring and fall abt. 400 hours. When you split the tra check the dry "cold weather starting" disk .Check the shock springs in the disk ,see if they are broken or mashed. A new disk costs $120 or so.If the rear main seal is leaking you probably have oil on it. Check the pressures on the transmission before you do anything. should be 180 psi. these trany's will slip momentarly when shifted into 7th gear. they will jerk you in 3-5-7- because one of the brake pack componets is not turning(normal) and suddenly it has to go engine speed , this trans is almost indestruable but they do wear out. I agree with your comments. The previous owner said he turned it down to 80pto hp after he had to overhaul the motor. As far as the rear main leaking I can see how that would cause problems. I haven't found any leakage at that point and this weekend I hope to remove the inspection plate to confirm the rear main problems you spoke about. My plans for this tractor is to pull a 500 gal sprayer,Run a hydraulic seed wagon,Mow with a 7' chopper, run an pto driven auger and push snow at home. The turbo will come in nice mowing as some waterways only get mowed twice a year and only when I'm bored. Thanks for the post!

Thanks for all the posts. I went to talk to the local John Deere $ervice Manager and he said that 7th Gear is direct drive in a 3020 P.S. The symptoms I described Points to the "Clutch Pack" in front of the transmition. There is a lever in on the left side in front of the instrument panel that allows one to disengage the transmition. If it has hung up then the "Clutch Pack" is slipping. I freed the lever up but haven't tested the tractor as it's 10 degrees out now. He also said to replace the "clutch pack" was $400 dollars in parts and $450 in labor. He also said not to leave the "clutch pack" disengaged as the power steering would not recieve oil and would burn up. If one uses the clutch reengage it as soon as the motor starts.

As I recall reading about power shift in my 4020 manual (I have SR), the clutch is only used for engine starting or creeping. Otherwise its intended to stay engaged and you run up through the gears of the PS to get moving, so you start in 1st gear every time, not with the clutch. If when you are moving in 5th gear and the clutch slips much when you hit 6th gear there might be a problem. The PS that my neighbors have had tended to create a divot in the road as they hit each gear while headed home for lunch.

No ! It is not normal. You will find the tranny is made up of clutch packs and brake packs. And you have either some clutch packs or brake packs that are bad. One test is to get the tractor moving and then ease the inching peddel ( clutch peddel)down while you are moving. If the tractor gains speed in travel C3 is bad. That is the simple test. Next take it to some one who can run more pressure test on it. Best of luck

Oaktree, I just received a service manual on 3000 series tractors today. It tells info about the power shift trans. and how to test the packs and other tests. It is $$ about $59.00, it's about 2 inches thick though. I just bought a 1964 3020HC, mine creeps in park. I figure I'll have to do some adjustments. Good luck.

I just ordered jd operators and service manual didn't ask how much they were. My combine manuals ran over 200 dollars but have proven well worth it.What brand did you order?

I bought mine direct from JD. It's service manual SM-2038. I also bought the CD rom parts catalog for $15.00 more than a printed version plus it includes a large amount of other tractors.

NATE if your 3020 creeps in park then the park pawl is not working.if it creeps in any gear with peddle in you have warped clutches

TWOPOP- looked at it today. Found the park brake cable froze up have to order another. That will probably cure the creeping in park.

I looked at the process today in the service manual about adjusting the parking pawl going to try and work on it on Tuesday. I'll see what I come up with. This is the first power shift tractor I've bought, others been two-bangers I've worked on. Thanks
