Not the worst gas hog in modern history, but close. The International hydrostats were worse at gas consumption. Nebraska tractor tests showed 7.92 hp-hr per gallon. At 88 hp, it could burn 11 gallons per hour with that rating, and it will. Several years ago, I found a 4020 gas for $5250 and diesels of similar age and condition were going for about $9000. Both have gone up since. The first year working about 25 acres I used 400 gallons of gas, then I weaned back to 250. But even at 400 gallons a year, at a farm price of about 70 cents a gallon it would run 14 years on the price difference even if the diesel didn't need any fuel at all. To wean it, I mainly replaced the float needle and seat, it gets worn by vibration and doesn't seal well so the engine runs rich. I found the choke didn't open all the way and the Donaldson precleaner top was domed down instead of up and that choked a bit. I put on copper plug wires, the right heat range plugs, and timed to the book. Its worked find ever since. I have to choke it for quick starts even when the engine is warm. I'm not leaning it any further. Its traction limited so it pulls hard enough for my needs. Gerald J.
