I bought a 4020 that has a 1000rpm pto shaft with no bolts or snap ring to change it. I have never seen this kind. How do I change it?

I guess we're not doing a real good job of answering your question..

IF you really do have "1000 only" PTO and want to convert to 540 / 1000 PTO, here's a summary of what's required:

Removal of the long shaft at the bottom of the trans case and replacing it with the long 540/1000 shaft and bearings. You will also have to replace the rear bearing housing assembly and get the stub shafts. A soft steel plug to the upper right of this housing will be knocked out to install the 540 countershaft assembly. All of this can be done without splitting the tractor. These parts are still available new, but are $$$! A GOOD salvage yard will be able to tell you exactly what you need to pull this off, but beware; These tractors have been in service long enough to be worn out. Check your "new" cluster gear and the gear on the long shaft for pitting. Don't worry about the blue area on the long shaft. They are all that way. It's where the factory guys weld the two parts of the shaft together.

Serial #?

Power-shift or synchro?

Did you look REAL close for a snapring, or try to pull the shaft out?

You suppose he might have a "1000 RPM only" PTO?

I've never seen a real one, but I think it is listed in the parts catalog.

That's why I was wondering what the S.N. was... to check the PC for applicable options.
